Was that distortion when the holding slide appear caused by the tape or was that as broadcast? I know everything back in the early 90s wasn't as smooth as things are now, but that looks very VHS-esque.
My guess is that the VT fault caused a disturbance in the sync pulses, which meant that the cut to the slide was non sync. The VHS was probably more sensitive to this than tellies are.

Apologies for what may be a 'blonde moment,' but what does 'sync' refer to in the context of this?
When you cut between two sources they need to be synchronised for it to be clean, so the first line of the incoming source needs to be at the same point as line one of the outgoing one otherwise you get a frame roll.
It's interesting that you started this topic by suggesting that the current bland announcers could learn a lesson from a 20 year old clip but then you include a recent example of how it should be done. Do you need a little longer to make your mind up?
No I don't actually. Unfortunately, among today's lot, the "bland brigade" way outnumber those that are actually good at it. Phil is one of few who can think on his feet, add a bit of personality and generally do a rather nice job.
Finally, something we agree on. Phil does a very good job.
What the hell were they thinking with that music ... !
I think it's pretty catchy, to be honest. Most of my guilty pleasures consist of testcard music...
On that subject, I know generic albums are available for testcard music, but surely these aren't used by the BBC? If I'm right in saying that, do they get theirs specially made for them?
The Watchdog programme and Anne's role just doesn't seem to work anymore for some reason. Rogue Traders should return to being a programme in it's own right however.
If you missed Watchdog tonight, then Pontins interview is well worth a watch, this link should take you straight there:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b015zmjy/?t=30m29s Pontins was 'trending' on Twitter all night, think it's turned into a bit of a PR disaster for them
Still as biting as ever then... Mrs Downey that is. I love as just as it gets really heated and the debate gets going, Anne goes "Mrs Downey thankyou" and promptly ends it. wha? I'm sure Anne was never like this on the old Watchdog... what has happened? Weakest Link has made her soft in her old age!
It seems to have been a problem between the output of the pres suite and coding & mux. You'll have seen it spring back into life at around 1655. (The studio were continuing as if nothing was wrong - I think they were available online)
