Yeah you sure the vendingmachine-less version wasn't just the "short"? The iPlayer version over Christmas had no vending machine shots either.

It's a real rink in some deprived area on the east of Britain. The skaters are all real. They're there doing what they're doing. The penguins are quite obviously CGI. All attempts to teach penguins formation skating were abandoned in 1962 after what later became known as "The Big Whoopsey".

The decorations were painted on after the penguins, and the big bauble tree was put in at the same time.


What he said! The lights, baubles, tree, BBC One logo and penguins were added electronically. The rink, skaters, ice, drinks machine and the bottle that fell from the drinks machine are the only real elements.

So they must have covered up the tree with a graphic as I have said and digitally altered the picture so that the skaters seem to be doing a full circle.

Seriously people look at the Christmas ident and then look at this one. Shot for shot it is the same except for the Christmas elements. In the Christmas version you even see the tree from other angles and yet in this new version you can't see the tree from those same angles. It was added later, but it shows how good it was when quite a few of us thought the tree was real.

I remember somebody saying that the best effects are the ones you don't notice.

I'm in Scotland, so perhaps they played out the short version, although it did seem quite long to the form up. Laughing

I'm joking by the way.

The BBC One idents are some of the most creative on British TV at the moment and I love the fact that there they do them in so many different styles. I'm wondering if we'll get another couple of new ones next month.

The Skaters are real, obviously because some of them saw the Ident that I uploaded on YouTube and commented that they were in it.

I did exactly the same thing last week when I found footage of my infamous 1929 moon landing on Youtube. They never believe it was me and that I was actually there as opposed to being in a green screen studio Crying or Very sad

We've known since October that the skaters are real because one of their acting agents mentioned it on their website.

The thing is some people just won't believe what they're being told, even if it's the truth.
