How odd that they should re-use this so soon; and I really think it is a poor move.
Tampering with it and putting it in with the regulars has rather spoiled it. The christmas version was just fine, and it should have stayed a festive ident. The removal of the tree and change of music really leaves this version inferior to the original - IMO what should have remained a special symbol has really been cheapened, especially after dragging it out again only just over a month after it was packed away.
There's no way they should wheel this out again next Christmas (like they did Snowball) now that this has been done, regardless of the tweaks.

There were moans the penguin ident in December was not festive or Christmassy enough.
There were moans at one stage about the money the BBC were spending on new idents.
Now there are moans when the BBC re-use a concept (which for all we know was tweaked for Christmas and was always planned as a Winter Ident) to increase the ident choice for its main channel - makes perfect sense to me.
They can't win!
If you want to see idents that contain dull plain music and little imagination then tune to ITV - at least the BBC are attempting to be different both with ident ideas and continuity in general.

Why though? I remember ITV during the 'Celebrity' ident phase just adding a bit of sparkle to the usal idents with nothing specifically new for Christmas.
Oh and then they stopped bothering all together.

Why?
We can see it's among the regulars and now being used outside of christmas. And if the BBC were to use idents during the Christmas period that we see during other times of the year (take Kites, Moon, Helicopter et al) what's special about that? Unless you'd rather have standard symbols being used during Christmas?

If they changed the soundtrack it would work better. I always liked the penguins and thought they deserved another outing, however I do appreciate where people are coming from about it being a Christmas ident.
When I first saw it I thought that it was a waste that they were just around for Christmas as it would make a great ident. Maybe the penguins can feature in more idents and have some adventures, like bumping into the hippos.

Because of course it's cheaper to re-edit an ident than to stick to the set you already have. Right.

It is poor, but this is more BBC cost-cutting 2008.

You mean other than the music and the terrible way they have replaced the tree?

Wouldn't "replaced" imply that something else was put in its stead?
The music ... well it's not great is it, and the three-note signature sounds somewhat familiar to the eBay ads. The logo ... looks pretty well illegible on that YouTube clip, but I'm yet to see it broadcast so I'll reserve judgement until I do. Black I feel just wouldn't suit it - perhaps a shade of red to keep marketing happy.
But on a whole I like it. The penguins made me smile when first I saw them, and they continue to do so now.
