God bless them, it was well meant. Everyone loved the idents at the time, and they were probably desperately trying to think of a way of using them in the new year. But it doesn't work.
The other alternative, of course, being that they had planned this all along, in which case they've wrecked what could've been a decent ident in its own right because everyone will associate it with Christmas.

wow - it still had the sparkles!
and the music is awful - why can't they keep the christmas ones for the time they aer really needed?

Hmm it doesn't seem to work, probably because it's associated with Christmas and still has a slightly Christmas theme, even though the main symbol (the tree) has disappeared. The music, although not too bad on its own, doesn't fit with the ident and fails to add anything overall.
Is this one way of the BBC cutting costs?

I honestly think the reason BBC One have brought it back is nothing more than popularity. 'Penguins' was a hit with viewers and certainly got friends of mine, who would never usually discuss such things, talking about it.
Unfortunately they've made a real hash of it and we're left with an empty looking ident with a unfitting soundtrack and an underlying Christmas feel...in February.
