Did it move or was it just a still (the tail)?

Yes it did move, it curled up on the screen instead of the normal red circle sweep endcap.

I to think it is annoying when they talk over the idents. They should wait until the logo comes up and then say ''This is BBC one'' or ''You are watching BBC one''. Of course that wasn't a problem in the good old days of British Broadcasting as the logo was on all the time on the ident.

Just seen Helicopter for the first time. Have to say that is a fantastic ident. Great audio with great video. I think i would say its up there with Space. Both great.

I agree, but it annoys me a bit that the announcers always talk over most of it, and the logo form up

Well sorry for doing our jobs, but idents are intended to have us talking over it....or has that bit passed you by in the past 30 odd years?

Well it would appear that the new BBC idents (unlike the dancers) are based on a system where there is an introduction and then a grand logo reveal. Therefore taking into account that Channel 4's annos wait for the logo to appear the assumption made on here would be that the BBC would do the same.

However as the BBC's breaks between shows put the concept of "show the same trailer the person has seen 1500 times this week" rather than having a glimpse of what is to come then introducing the next show that was clearly too much to ask.

It would appear so. We (in the nations and regions) are very much at network's beck and call. Quite often they only play out 16 seconds of a symbol when the BBC ONE or BBC TWO branding materialises after 15 seconds. Surprisingly, trying to say something which is 1 second long can be tricky, so quite often "we" have to start our blurb much earlier.

Please don't tar us all with the one brush.

I should have made more clear that I blame those who devise the annoying break structure rather than those who actually do the talking.

What sort of set up did they use to film the part of the Helicopter ident with form up of the logo? Another helicopter? Or some sort of crane?

Possibly another helicopter given the shots that the ident uses

Im thinking it must have been a camera suspended high above as its impossible to hold a helicopter completely still. Even hovering it would move about.

Yeah but you can straighten it up in post production.

The problem is that, at least on network, the sound of the ident is faded so low, you can't hear the musical hook when the logo forms up. Therefore the idents just look like some nice pictures with a bit of random music over the top

The way they announce should have been changed when the current idents came in

Exactly! The announcers are always talking over the hook. And there is one guy that when he talks they turn the music down so low you can hardly hear it.

The problem with BBC continuity is that the idents have changed but the presentation hasn't. They need to remember that they are not talking over a silent spinning globe, so they need to know when to start talking and when to stop.

They've made things difficult for themselves by having the hook at the end and not at the start. Remember the balloon and dancer idents. You'd have the identifiable hook in the first few seconds and then the announcer would start talking.

I don't think they're that bad. I think they've changed their ways since 10.5 years ago!
