The problem in the East region sounds like an opting problem - does occasionally happen and sometimes it can occur on only one or some trasmission platforms. It has been known for a region to opt vision for a locally branded ident but remain with network sound (perhaps if an unusual presenter is doing the one/six/ten etc). Obviously, any region attempting this needs to be sure they know which ident network is going to use and make sure they (a) use the same and (b) run it as-near-as-damn-it in synch! Funnily enough, this used to work far better with the dancers than it does with the new set of idents.

That was the first time I'd seen it on my TV, and I actually rather liked it. The soundtrack is wonderful and gives it a great, dramatic feel. Although I agree that a little more than a flash of red helmet would bring more consistency with the other idents.

They used Helicopter into Ladder 49 on BBC1 tonight and it just seemed to work. It's a good ident for serious programmes/dramas etc and is starting to grow on me.

How do they do that when the network announcer gives the name of the regional London presenter?
The regions do know which ident is being played, they have a display connected to the playout automation called 'presfax'.

If the regions don't have a recorded anno for the name of the network news presenter, i.e. it's not one of the usual presenters then NC1 will play what is called a 'network safe symbol' and not mention the name of the regional London presenter in their anno.

Nice to see Helicopter in the South West (up until now I hadn't spotted it); using the third and shortest edit - I'm guessing it is reserved for these pre-news local symbols.

Just saw Helicopter before
Watchdog
for the first time on my 22" TV. It is, after some reflection, an absolutely gorgeous ident. It's impeccably designed and executed.

Quite an original endcap. Good to see them experimenting with different styles these days!
