I still think though one generic "globe" ident - whether an animation or "real" should be incorporated into the current set to at least be used into the news.

The globe is now the symbol of BBC News though. BBC One needs its own distinctive symbol. The circle doesn't quite cut it. It's better than the dancers, which was an idea rather than something physical like a circle, but still not strong enough.

It's the same old chestnut. We all know it's not good enough - probably even the BBC know that - but noone can think of a better idea.

The globe has pretty much always been the symbol of BBC News.

With the exception of Miss Heggassey perhaps, nobody said during the virtual era or balloon era that BBC1 couldn't use the globe because the news were using it. BBC Sport also used the globe too

And there is absolutely no shame in BBC1's branding being closely linked to BBC News - after all they are both really the flagship services of the BBC.

(and regardless of you're argument, I'm only really suggesting using it to link into the BBC News anyway.)

For those interested - the helicopter involved belongs to Castle Air. Those old enough will remember them as the team behind Treasure Hunt and Interceptor...

The first thing I thought was Interceptor!

I'm not disagreeing with you, I wouldn't mind them using a globe for BBC One too, but I think this is the reason they've moved away from it. These are more brand aware times and so it's only BBC News who use the globe now - BBC Sport stopped using it about the same time as BBC One didn't they?

The globe has only been used as a logo for BBC News since 1999 hasn't it? It was featured in the virtual era but only as part of the BBC coat of arms.

BBC One Scotland finally used it just before the One O'clock News - but it was only shown for about 8 seconds and was clearly a shorter version as the resolve was very swift.

Nice to see it though and hopefully we will see a longer ident later today.

Surely we must get a BBC One South West branded version of this ident - it seems almost purpose-made to link into Spotlight. In fact, if we still had the old pre-corporate titles the join would be almost seamless!

No local continuity into the Six tonight due to the fire at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Probably on my own here but the start of the music reminded me of Doctor Who's soundtrack, namely Rose's final scene.

I thought the music was very doctor who Smile

If a clean HQ MP3 of it could become available, I would be VERY happy to download it ... (hint hint)

Same here - would love to hear the whole thing in top quality and uninterrupted, but there doesn't seem to be any way of getting it, at least not yet.
