Whoops... Embarassed it celebrates its eightieth birthday in one year and just under ten months.

I love the new ident. That heIicopter is sexy. I can see it being aired before programmes like Spooks, and action / thriller films.

They could have incorporated a bit more red into it though, perhaps with red flashing lights on the helicopter or they could have used The Needles lighthouse off the Isle of Wight (as featured in a previous Balloon ident) which is painted red and white.

Does anyone know if there is another version with more upbeat 'action' music?

For those interested - the helicopter involved belongs to Castle Air. Those old enough will remember them as the team behind Treasure Hunt and Interceptor...

I used to love Interceptor. When that guy would sneak up behind the contestants and then scream the look on their faces was priceless!! Very Happy

The ident is so clever - particularly since it is designed to be before the news. The idea that the BBC are delivering the vital information (ie the news) in the form of the parcel/ lightbulb is subtle yet very powerful. I think that the new ident is superb. Weird, admittedly, but superb nonetheless.

You've summed up what I was thinking earlier about the sequence - and though I've not heard it being confirmed as a News ident, I'd be surprised if it isn't now used in that way.

No, it started in November 1936, so it is 71

It makes Moon sound postively upbeat! Visually very impressive and nice to have something more appropriate for News and sombre programmes. I assume there's a short version though - 18secs before the form up is pretty long.

Well they are certainly mixing them up now. But as has been said here the channel really needs a strong logo. A circle isn't a logo, it's just a circle.

Yes, it's not meant to be a logo. The 'BBC one' is the logo, the circle is just the visual identity that links the presentation. It's in teh same way that BBC4 has the 4 squares linking everything together

They're pretty much screwed though if a national figure is involved in a terrible accident where a helicopter gets caught up with some kites - in moonlight! Wink

Still hate it, still think it's an awful ident, one of the worst, and still think dropping the red colouring has removed a strong element of the brand.

Re: the balloon - it was axed far too quickly and IMO the dancers should never have happened. They should have just continued with the balloon for a few more years using the red box instead, though by the time the circles came in it would have been time for it to go.

I still think though one generic "globe" ident - whether an animation or "real" should be incorporated into the current set to at least be used into the news.

Probably on my own here but the start of the music reminded me of Doctor Who's soundtrack, namely Rose's final scene. Love the ident but it's going slightly too far the other way with the sombreness. It's a good news ident but they still don't have a perfect one that doesn't evoke too much feeling one way or the other.
