Well they are certainly mixing them up now. But as has been said here the channel really needs a strong logo. A circle isn't a logo, it's just a circle.

It had one of those. It was dropped in 2002.

That wasn't a logo was it Simon? It was a symbol.

If I was a controller I'd actually bring back an old ident instead of looking for a new one, it'd be the last thing anyone would suspect.

I think that's what cylon6 meant. The circle of today is meant to be that symbol/logo, whatever you want to call it, but as people are saying here it's sometimes difficult to determine exactly what the theme is in the new idents.

It's been suggested to me that BBC1 seriously thought of bringing back the balloon when Peter Fincham took over, it never happened of course.

Reusing previous idents as regular idents is very unlikely. However, as BBC1 celebrates its 90th birthday in 2 years, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the old globes were dug out of the attic. After all, as they're all circles, they conform exactly to BBC One branding guidelines (apart from the small matter of the logos).

Think about it though, you say that the balloon was dropped too soon - good, in my opinion. Better than dragging them on until it became stale. It means they are remembered well. But it therefore meant that it was hard for whatever followed to be well received. Admittedly as a whole, the dancers were not the best, but there were good elements - the soundtracks, the general presentation. It was only ones such as 'Music Video' which let it down in my eyes.

And prematurely at that!

That's the view I've had of the Dancers for some years now - the initial concept would not have sounded promising to many people, but to be truthful the likes of Capoeira, Acrobat, Skaters and Ballet in particular were all superbly directed and accompanied with consistently good audio.

I'd say the problem with Moon is that it music sounds a bit too sweet, perhaps a bit romantic. Helicopter's music was quite good.

I very much agree; it's the strongest aspect of the new symbol, IMO.

To add a counterpoint to a previous poster, it was the Moon soundtrack I always considered drab - it just passes by without evoking any response in me - while by contrast Helicopter comes across as wholly more poignant - and, I expect, comparatively more effective than the former too when placed before serious programmes.

I've also considered Moon's premise itself to perhaps be a tad too surreal for serious programming. They're holding pieces of a gigantic Moon design and standing in boats trying to piece it together like a jigsaw - not exactly normal.

I did say before this ident debuted, that BBC1 needed a serious ident after all the fantasyland whimsy - and it's now got one, no doubt, which is great news.

One more thing - I was scanning through posts earlier and someone referred to the ident as "crap"...I take it you did not have the pleasure of seeing the Lawn Circles! Wink

Did people think the 2 was stale in 2001, however? It had already survived the 1997 corporate rebrand because of its popularity, and new concepts were brought in to continue the theme.

The balloon on BBC1 was their equivalent of the 2. Adaptable and could be placed in any situation or theme. While it couldn't have gone on forever, I do feel the balloon could have gone on for another four or five years at the time of its departure. Its axing, coming when it did, just seemed like change for the sake of change.

The balloons could have carried on longer by having new ones made every so often. There were probably around 100 balloon idents in total the dancers had about 14 idents, and seeing the same 14 clips endlessly for 4 years is boring. The problem with TV companies is that they feel the need to change things all the time how can you build up brand loyalty when the logo constantly changes?

For those interested - the helicopter involved belongs to Castle Air. Those old enough will remember them as the team behind Treasure Hunt and Interceptor...
