It is called, unsurprisingly, Helicopter .

I do well hope it's a sombre mood of symbol; BBC1 is crying out for it ATM. Practically every ident we've had since launch has just been either too surreal or too upbeat - even Kites is IMO rather energetic for the standard News ident. An additional one is needed which leads into News (and programmes on weighty issues) with the appropriate gravitas.

Thanks - so have you seen it or where did you find out its name from? Clearly not one to use into the news if there is a helicopter or sea disaster!

Is BBC1 going to switch to its usual idents from the first junction on New Year's Day or continue with the Christmas idents up to News 24? I remember BBC2 going back to their regular idents after Jools Hootenanny one year and they debuted several new idents after midnight including Excalibur and Catalyst.

BBC2 at the time (1999 into 2000) would not have been using Christmas idents up to and including New Year's Eve; the "three day rule" was still in place.

I think you could be right on that one, but I can't remember.

1999 was the last year the Christmas idents appeared on Christmas Eve-Boxing Day only.

In 2000, the BBC surprised everyone by unveiling the idents the first junction after 6pm on Friday 22 December. But it was still back to normal after Boxing Day.

2001 - another Friday night launch (21 Dec); 6pm on BBC2, an hour later on BBC1 due to the news. Normal idents finally resumed after midnight on New Year's night.

2002 - Saturday 21 December launch on both channels. This time, however, they would stay until both channels closed down on New Year's Night.

In Australia, most times channels would launch new idents/style after the Midnight Fireworks, so I say tune into New Year Live & wait until 12:15am when it finishes & see if they launch it?

Yeah I was thinking that as well, I'll set the recorder just in case. Usually there would be some BBC people with inide info tipping us off....but it's New Year's Eve so I don't blame them for not being at a computer. Very Happy

A nice Happy New Year anno from who else? Duncan of course. And it looks like we'll get the new Helicopter ident from later on today as they used Snowball into a film and will probably show it into News 24 as well.

There were rumours of a new ident on another forum and then a post from somebody here called BBC Scotland confirmed that there would be a new ident called Helicopter that would be launching on New Year's Day. I didn't know the title of it until it was mentioned by BBC Scotland. If you go back a page or two you will see what he or she said.

The clock used in the late-1960s is not the same device used in the 1980s. The most obvious indication of this is the thickness of the numeric markers on the clock face.

Yes, BBC Scotland was the first to publicly mention it, but only that the symbol "features a helicopter"...

If you go back a page ot two, you'll find t'was someone else who confirmed the symbol's name is Helicopter Wink [/pedantry]!
