It's great for old continuity that site isn't it? As much as I love idents, the trailers stick out for me as well. The trailers for Christmas 1987 got me so excited as a youngster and then you'd wonder what the ident would look like.

Is it just me, or does the very first shot look like it could be a snippet of the ident Confused

I agree, it does look like it could be, however i doubt that the bbc would include an ident in a promo. If it is is the case then im not looking forward to seeing the full ident, as the brief glimpse we have caught is fairly unimpressive.

They're ballet dancers aren't they? Not ice skaters.

If so that might be a reference to the drama Ballet Shoes, rather than anything to do with the ident.

The whole beginning sequence of the trailer is themed around circles. Ballet dancers in a circle, Richard Bucket's head, someone holding up a marble, a keyhole, then Doctor Who's radar. I think it's safe to say the opening scene is nothing to do with the ident.

That opening shot in the trail is from a programme, and not a part of the new ident.

In the event it turned out there was no surprise (the ident being the same as the trail endboard).

But yes, the trail graphics are as important as the ident for creating a sense of build-up for Christmas. Compare the approach of now to 1980 - that year, BBC1 really went to town on the sheer amount of stings and promos to accompany its snowman/skaters theme. That year's ident was also one of my all-time favourites and we also got to see it again on Swap Shop. By stark contrast, in 2007 we once again have the previous year's trail endboard design (basically the same idea as the two years leading up to that, updated only because of the rebrand).

It seems quite surprising that the BBC would want to churn out the same festive graphics year upon year when retailers like M&S go out of their way to make sure every aspect of each year's Christmas "look" is fresh and distinct from what went before. Sure the BBC may not be trying to sell you something, but a Christmas look is crucial to encouraging people to watch the programmes.

I think it was in 1978- possibly 1976- that Dennis Potter wrote that there was now the sense of the BBC trying to sell you something, you didn't know what it was, but it was definitely there.

That 'sense' has increased over the decades, such has been the effect of commercialism and marketing. It's just that the BBC do it poorly, probably due to that other overriding influence- politics.

Do you think the new controller will leave the idents alone?

I'm with you, Christmas trails create a certain buzz and excitement, but the same style of trails each year is very boring. And the fact we have a child whispering 'the one for christmas' for maybe the 4th year in a row gets on my nerves.

But at least we get trails at Christmas, I miss not getting seasonal trails promoting their wares like they used to. It would make you look forward to the new autumn season. It's just so dull now.

Just watched it again and if you look the girl in the middle of the circle is Emma Watson, star of Ballet shoes. She appears later in the trail with exactly the same make-up.

Mystery solved and confirms it's nothing to do with the ident.
