Perhaps it was just never taken down. It's not the first web site I've seen which fails to delete old content; even if the ident is being used again, strange that it would not have been removed in the new year.
Years and years and.....ago, I worked out that the Christmas
ident
should appear on 20 December, change slightly each day, but more on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day (particularly) and Boxing Day and continue until New Year's Eve, when it would be replaced with a New Year ident, which would change slightly on New Year's Day, again on 2/3 January incorporating "New Season on BBC1" and continue until 6 January.
(Details about possible idents withheld. The lighting change for time of day would happen with both idents. )
The usual
ident
would then return, but would be changed/refreshed on a regular, perhaps yearly basis.
But not with a symbol of their own. I've just seen a trail for "Saturday Live Again" featuring icons similar if not identical to those on the BBC1 ident and stings. "Isn't it great to have variety back on Saturday nights", or words to that effect, says the narration.
Really, we should pity a broadcaster with no ideas of its own...

I saw this very trail that you speak of, just last night - and thought exactly the same thing!
A shame to witness more of the 'me too' attitude make its way into ITV's branding, and in such blatant form. If somehow, there genuinely was no stealing of ideas here, then this is one
heck
of a coincidence!
But even if it was outsourced, the production company would only be doing exactly what ITV told them to. So I suggest ITV knew exactly what they were doing.
