Personally I think this year the Christmas idents should be shown for one week maximum, followed by a different ident for the New Year. By New Year's Eve we were all bored to death by the (otherwise very good) Christmas ident because it was used for far too long.

I agree - using them a week before Christmas was ridiculous. I don't mind a couple of days, and with Christmas Eve falling on the Monday, using them from the Friday night through to New Year would be about right.

It might be an idea though to also use the ident in the week running up to Christmas - but only for Christmas specials.

So who was it who said there would be no new idents this year, eh?

I am very concerned that BBC1 should now consider it necessary to adopt seperate branding for Saturday nights, - against the ethos of one-size-fits-all that has worked so well for the past 44 years. The need for a seperate "Saturday Night" look devalues the programmes which viewers are watching because they are decent programmes and not because of what introduces them. You would expect this from ITV1 but not BBC1.

That said, the ident and stings are excellent - but it should be absorbed into the usual rotation and used as part of a set to ensure BBC1 retains dignity in its branding.

Have I missed something? When did BBC1 introduce Saturday night branding?

Obviously you didn't catch all of the stings. One of the neon signs clearly said "Saturday Nights" and there may actually have been more than one variant of the ident.

Given the content of last night's Casualty, the new ident was not exactly the most appropriate one to introduce it with.

Good point - If I had the choice, I'd probably err on the side of seriousness at the expense of breaking from exclusively Saturday Nights branding for one junction - so consideration for whether it's appropriate should really come first.

Though, I doubt we can expect it that mindset to be (re?)adopted for as long as we have a BBC that sees fit to show digital fairies on-screen ahead of news bulletins! Confused

I take it that it wasn't used before the late news though was it?

The kites ident was used for the late news.

So they could have easily dropped it for casualty. Or they could keep the dark night theme going and use the moon ident.

And thereafter, it was back to the usual idents.

Yes and Mission Control before Con Air. Did anybody see what they used before Strictly Come Dancing tonight?
