There's one thing I've noticed looking back on some of my ident tapes. BBC1 used to have lots of image manipulation on the trailers and links. I think it was called Quantel and in the 90's they used something called Cleo/Clio? You would see it used a lot on shows like Top Of The Pops, Going Live, Live & Kicking and on CBBC during the links. But now it's nowhere to be seen. What happened to it?

Not entirely sure what you mean but perhaps it became dated?

My rubbish, convoluted description isn't helping. It's a way of moving from one scene to another, but instead of just cutting to another scene the picture might turn into a ball or a coke bottle.

Have a look at the end of these titles of Live & Kicking to see what I mean.

Most certainly dated then.

It used to be on so many shows and now it's like everybody has stopped using it.

This effect was regularly spoofed by The Day Today, as shown in this this clip.

Ah. I think the fact you can use that effect in home video software packages makes it... in a professional mainstream.. dated and redundant except for comic value.

I suppose it is dated in a way. I think the majority of users that I remember were the kids shows (mainly Saturday morning) and the links on CBBC and CITV.
I remember that SM:TV used to use them a lot, especially in the Ant & Dec era, usually when showing pop videos, or brief titles into games, etc.

I suppose as technologies improved most junctions on live programmes are now either straight cuts or use a chromakey of some sort to link stings to the VT or to the live content.

That's a much better example than mine. It was so commonplace and now it's a rarity on TV shows. There seemed to be a couple of different machines. The BBC used CLEO -curvi linear effects option (I think), I always loved those effects and wish they would bring them back.

Good grief! BBC1 used Hippo into a news update. That is just so wrong on so many levels. Rolling Eyes

About time Pudsey put in an appearance on an ident. We had special Comic Relief idents with the dancers and with these newer circle logos. I think you have to go back to the 90's for a special Children In Need ident.

Pretty Disturbing BBC HD advert there with the music from a old ps3 advert...

Filling the gap with trailers, why don't they get a break filler...

No pudsey, just 'This is BBC One'.
