I think the point is that the older generation who had and can remember the older styles of idents won't identify with the new styles of branding. However, the younger generation will expect these days big, bold branding that looks and sounds amazing on screen. That's what makes change.
Big, bold branding? I didn't think we had that anymore. Most idents these days seem wishy-washy and lifestyley, like something off an advert for Tena Lady.
Yes - big and bold to me more accurately sums up what symbols used to be like - it was how they worked.
Sometimes I think 'bold' now is being confused with 'lots going on'. There is plenty of (live) action to be seen in modern idents, but the same can be said for trails and programmes - and that's what disappoints me; idents are continually being stripped of the very traits that made them distinctive from the rest of output. That's no fun, it just blurs the line even further.
All 5 main channels are applying similar styles, and all are questionable as to whether they reflect their respective schedules, which rather makes you wonder what the point is. BBC2's look was witty and alternative two years ago, now it isn't - it's just disappearing in with the rest.
Whether you've got a particularly strong linking symbol in your idents or not, a lot is decided by an appropriate tone and visuals that connects in some way - that's probably why Helicopter is my favourite BBC1 ident now, with Kites in second place. For that same reason, Lawn Circles is at absolute last (because I still believe it does not fit, at all - a waste of a potential good summer ident).

Live action
can
be big and bold though. Take Channel 4's flying blocks: they're very subtle in catching your eye, but the
logo
is big, bold and imposing. Some of BBC2's present idents (namely Zoetrope, Seascape and Mirror) are also very simple, but very imposing. They're also more interesting than the 'old world' symbols. Remember that BBC2's (technically live-action) idents from 1991 are largely responsible for catalysing the move from CGI to 'real world' scenarios - these symbols were also strong, imposing and bold.
I do agree about Lawn Circles. It just looks like it was conceived by Lorraine Hegessey(sp?). The scenario is completely out of place on the BBC's flagship channel.

That's so true. There was a time when every channel went for computer graphics, Sky in particular. They would go to America and get idents made for their channels.
BBC2's new idents in 1991 were a complete 180 for the industry, moving away from garish and showy computer graphics to models with a bit more imagination. Unfortunately the more 'real' idents started to move away from the BBC2 mode to live action, giving us a completely pointless scene with a logo slapped on it. Those were dark days and we are now turning the corner. It's interesting as you have said though that even with computer technology they are trying to keep it set in the real world with the Channel 4 and some BBC1 idents.
I do think that Lawn Circles is a great ident because with the circle theme you'd expect a crop circle ident, but you wouldn't expect it to be done by a bunch of Stepfordesque housewives. I like the way that the newer BBC1 idents surprise you in what's going on and how they make the circle. That's what I loved about the old style 2 idents, you couldn't guess what context the 2 would turn up in.
The circle is definitely one of BBC1's most successful branding excercises since the balloon, constantly surprising you. Long may it continue and hopefully with many more additions to come.

That's be one of two then?
To be honest I would say that most of the BBC1 rebrands worked to some extent, the mirror globe was a simple and yet clever idea. Stick a mirror behind a spinning globe to create a moving backdrop. And it would become an icon, the 3D globe in 1985 was a great piece of work and looked so good onscreen, the smoky globe which was very strong visually as it had so much going on, the balloon grew on many people and became beloved and the circle theme has gotten people talking again. So most of them have worked....apart from the one I left out.
But some have been more successful than others, the circles have had the general public commenting on them in a mostly positive way. I heard some children on the bus a few days ago talking about the Penguins and were laughing and smiling about them! I haven't heard mostly positive comments about the BBC1 idents from some members of the general public since the balloon.
