ITV announced their Autumn line up today and it looks quite strong. Does anybody know when BBC1 will be announcing theirs? Watching Who Do You Think You Are tonight I didn't think Hippo was the best ident to introduce it.

Will be good to finally see it, I hope, after all the chat about it!

Would be interesting to know how many people actually know what an ident is...I observe that most people talk right over both the ident and continuity announcer.

Those who have recorded programmes fast forward right up to the start and don't recognise idents as they then have to rewind slightly.

Any research out there to say what % of people watch and recongnise them?

That does annoy me when people either talk over it, skip through it or press the record button at the start so that when you watch it back you just hear '... in Casualty' for example. Saying that people seem to do the same with the programme titles as well. I've noticed many a person will fast forward through and then press play as soon as they see the titles start.

I suppose if nothing else idents do get people alert to the fact that the programme is about to start.

I think idents are just like theme tunes alerting you to the shows starting. You could be in the kitchen and then hear the Yorkshire TV/ATV/Central/Thames/LWT etc themes and rush in to catch the programme. These days when the themes aren't that distinct you look up and see them on the screen while reading a paper and know the show is starting. The thing with some of the newer idents is that you need to see it several times before you realise it's an ident. We heard some people saying they didn't know Space was an ident until BBC One came up, they thought it was a trailer. And how many times would people have looked away at the crucial moment of the Channel 4 form up and not realise what was going on?

Perhaps sometimes they can be too clever for their own good.

I think you're absolutely right. Just been reading Charlie Brooker's Dawn Of The Dumb book which includes this rather good article from a couple of years ago about the problem with the current trend for arty, marketing-driven idents. Well worth a read.

Sadly his hopes at the time for BBC Two weren't realised.

I see that BBC One hands over to the BBC News Channel for all of 20 minutes on Saturday night.

How pointless, surely the schedule could have been rejigged with an extra programme slotted in

Surely a bit of news is not that bad.

I think the point is that the older generation who had and can remember the older styles of idents won't identify with the new styles of branding. However, the younger generation will expect these days big, bold branding that looks and sounds amazing on screen. That's what makes change.

It's how it was structured that puzzled me.

Halfway through the paper review, admittedly with a welcome to BBC One viewers, Weather just before TOTH(which is correct), then 10 mins of what appeared to be a standard News channel bulletin, which just crashed out at the end of a report, no Goodbye to BBC One or anything.

Big, bold branding? I didn't think we had that anymore. Most idents these days seem wishy-washy and lifestyley, like something off an advert for Tena Lady.
