It's so true, though thinking about it, years ago we only ever saw one ident, the same ident before every programme.
You know that is a brilliant point.

For years we'd just see one ident before a show, the only time you'd see more than one is if you were watching ITV and the region that made the show would have their ident on just before it started. Then Channel 4 came along and tore up the presentation rulebook. It was the same logo but several different idents, then others started following their lead.

I think the difference is, in years gone by, idents were simple affairs and consisted of little other, or sometimes nothing other, than a company logo.

Nowadays, idents are more creative, elaborate affairs featuring live action, quirky scenarios, and clever effects.

The trouble is after repeated viewing, quirky and clever quickly becomes tired and stale, like a joke told too many times.

The old BBC1 globes, ATV Zoom, LWT Ribbon, Anglia Knight, etc. weren't trying to convey emotions, give a sense of togetherness, inclusiveness or any other modern-day marketing guff. They were just there to tell people what they were watching and who made the programmes. I think their longevity and iconic status were due to their simplicity.

Not sure where to put this!

In light of Wales' gold medal in Beijing, BBC Wales have created another of their special idents. The example below was used into the Olympics highlights at 7:00pm.

(Sorry about the poor quality of the video!)

They're getting worse these idents - when they did the "BBC Won Wales" for the Grand Slam (more in 2005 than this year) and the "BBC ONE Wales, BBC NIL Germany" they were quite imaginative, but these just seem to be for the sake of it.

OH NO!! The greatest head of Light Entertainment the BBC ever had. He teamed Eddie Braben with Morecambe and Wise, found a Dutch gameshow and thought Bruce Forsyth could host it, this of course was The Generation Game. What an absolute shame! Crying or Very sad
