I reckon to a fair number of people, say "BBC One" and they'll think of the hot air baloon or depending on their age, a globe. Although there were lots of different baloon sequences, one single 'identity' really worked for BBC One IMO, whether that was the baloon or a globe (and yes, I know the baloon was a globe too, albeit a much subtler one!)

A brand formed of a single identity works and is, I would have thought, a key part of branding of anything. Think of Forumer's favourite idents and although some of them have lots of different variations, they're all based on one identity - Central's 'cake' or coloured ball, the Yorkshire Chevron, the '2's, even BBC Four's current set, all based on four images which look on the face of it just to be one image, is clearly one key identity.

Dare I suggest that loosely branding BBC One by means of a bunch of dancers or by a circle (which seems to be getting looser as more idents are produced) is not working anywhere near as well.
Well dancers and circles aren't logos in my book, the globe was BBC1's logo. But when it was in it's balloon period there were numerous variations with different types of music. So you could use an appropriate one for a junction. You wouldn't have Bungee introducing the news . The fact is there are various idents and some are suitable and some aren't.

It's true that once the programme starts you don't think about the ident that introduce it, but would anybody here seriously use Neon to introduce a documentary about cancer?

No, but I don't the the beeb would either.

They play Neon on Sat nights as it's entertainment night. The main problem is that it lacks variety, playing the same ident on one night, rather than what ident is played beforehand. Confused

I used to hate it in the Rhythm & Movement era when they'd debut a new ident and then show it all bloody evening!!! I get the same feeling with Neon, give us a variety of idents. I really don't see the point of having so many idents and then using the same one all the time. Even with the balloon, and they pretty much had enough idents for every junction, they settled on a few that they used over and over again.

BORING!!

I know, it's pointless.

I was also hoping they may extend the idea of 16 idents to maybe 30 and just keep the current look for 7 years or so ,as they're definitely the best they've had since the Balloon and I'd worry they may make the same mistake as the Dancers. It would surely be more cost effective than creating a whole new identity again.

That is an excellent point. It makes more sense to add to the set than create a whole new identity. You'd be spending the money anyway so spend it on an existing ident which has actually grown on many people and is an awards winner. Also it's interesting to see the Fear Factor kids talking about idents. That pleased me as much as them being Doctor Who fans. Smile

Yes I found that interesting as well that kids are noticing the idents. Just goes to prove that they aren't a waste of money after all Very Happy

They must have been thinking of the Channel 4 Tokyo ident when they saw the start of the programme. When are we going to see the new BBC1 idents I wonder?

Exactly. Remember Bouncy Puddings into the Tsunami special? That caused an uproar for weeks on end because it was inappropriate, and it's still brought up every time we discuss Christmas idents. Appropriate idents for appropriate programmes are essential.

I agree there are extreme examples, but for the most part, for something fictional like a Casualty storyline, I always forget which ident it was during the titles. I guess you lot don't agree then.

After the show starts I think we all forget about the ident that preceded it and get caught up in the show. But setting the tone at the start is just as important as not ruining the mood when a show finishes. I remember Casanova ending rather poignantly and then it gets ruined with a Phil Mitchell EastEnders trailer.
