Funny how people now miss the dancers yet when they were on-screen people were bored and fed up with them.
Nope, I don't miss them at all. The balloon was far better, but I know I can't pine for a return that will never happen. Still, I've yet to see a similarly strong brand on pretty much any other channel.
I don't miss the dancers at all and as soon as they debuted I was counting the days for them to be withdrawn. The only thing they did better was that you could identify the BBC1 tune in the first few seconds. With the circles the hook is at the end and the announcers talk over it so it can't be heard. But the circle idents are far more creative and more stunning visually.

Channel 4?
That's because it's not 'similarly strong' - it's far stronger than BBC1's.
Yes the '4' is the logo and the identity it has had since it started. The question people need to ask themselves is this. Do you automatically think of the channel when you see its logo? If somebody put the distinctive '4' or '2' in front of you, you'd immediately think of the channel. If they put a circle in front of you would you think they are just drawing shapes or referring to BBC1?
Agree the music was more distinctive - and the red was used better - but the currents ones are far better - though as I've said as each new one is introduced, those without the red which tied the brand together are weakening the brand.
I wouldn't say the circle is the logo - I'd say the "BBC one" is the logo now it's more than just text in a box - and it's incorporated into the idents and the trailers too with a rather distinctive animation.
The problem is that the BBC brand as a whole is now weaker without the box logos which linked them together - some channels kept them, others didn't - and IMO BBC2 and BBC4 need to drop them and break out of the box.
The BBC one and BBC three logos go quite well together, even though they're significantly different - but the BBC2/4 logos just don't work alongside them.

I'd agree with this - especially given that the "one" is in a custom font, which has been extended to The one Show, one Life, etc.

BBC4 would need a new ident concept to "drop the box" - their current idents
need
a box in the middle (which wouldn't have to be square, but needs to be an object of solid colour) to work.

Channel 4?
I wouldn't say so. Because the 4 is only visible for a second, people may just think that it's just an advert and switch over. The balloon was more distinctive.
Anyone notice how BBC Two slugs appear on BBC One to entice viewers to 2?
Complete with old logo!
What an improvement the strip logo makes though. Still don't understand why there isn't a strip version of the current logo (using Avenir) for pres such as this. Much clearer than a tiny teal box.
