What a load of miserable people you are. You build yourselves up over the package, whine that you have no 'spoilers' (surely too grand a phrase for a bunch of short clips) and then whinge when it doesn't live up the expectations that you yourselves set.

I think it's great that there's been a different ident/promotional package every year for ages. It's also great that these have been different in style each time too. Sure the red curtain ones were naff, but they were different to what came before and after. I seem to remember the 'wrapping paper' package not going down too well at the time but now seems to be fondly remembered.

As I've said before, I think some people need to get out more. I await cries of 'it's a presentation forum!' but that still doesn't mean that the following is a normal, balanced comment even in this context.

Is that it? Three idents in which two are absolutely s*** and one is half decent?

The BBC truly astounds me with what they deem as Christmas idents. An utter s***stain by far.
BBC ONE's is cheap, bland, vapid and generic. But BBC TWO goes the extra mile of s***e by being as fatalistic as 'the lads' and shoving the same 2011 ident into our eyes.

Worst seems too generous - this year's pres package is strenuous, fatalistic and downright crap.

I'm not sure what people want. Feature a celebrity and people hate it, have it purely graphical and people hate it, have animated celebrities and people hate it, have normal people in it and yes people hate it.

So you don't like this years Christmas idents? You've always got next years to look forward to hating.

Exactly the point I'm attempting to make above, thank you.

I don't think these are particularly awful, at least not by red curtain standards, but the soundtrack doesn't help. The music is a bit nondescript and doesn't have the BBC One logo, and the chattering in the ident means it has to be severely ducked for the announcer to be intelligible.

Nice idea, but the execution could be better.

The only positives I can say about the 2016 Christmas idents is that firstly, the animations are great and it captures the magic of Christmas - the first ident shows how people spend their time enjoying the occasion, which is what the idents were trying to achieve in the first place.

The problem here is that some of us have set expectations very highly and have been underwhelmed by it - it's sadly generic and bland.

If we aren't looking at the idents themselves - I'm fine with endboards as such, they're good.

I'd admit - I did go over the top with that rant.

Ok, now it's time to eat my words!! A new ident just aired at the 23:55 junction. A family sitting round the dinner table with a Christmas pudding being lit- I quite like it. I just didn't expect them to hold back a different one until as late in the day as this!

And of course, it's the first time BBC One have used a Christmas pudding in one of their idents since 1977!

New Christmas ident? I hope it's as good as the bauble, which is my favourite of the lot.

From reading this thread it seems that everyone saw the first one and immediately decided that it was the only one and it was the worst thing ever.

The idea of everyday Christmas scenes resolving on a circle is a very simple one but so far these are nicely shot, and with a little bit of humour. Not sure whether the music works, might have been better to follow on from the music in the promo. After everyone complaining about quickly getting bored of the same two Spout Boy ones last year, I'd have thought it's a good thing that there seem to be lots of them this time, suitable for different types of programme.

I have rewatched the idents (apart from the Christmas pudding) and I stand by my initial comments on them: I rarely complain about Christmas idents and I'm not going to do so this year. They're not bad at all.

The reason they may come across as unfestive is because of the programme trailers between junctions. None of them have been customised to incorporate the Christmas look and very little was seen of the endboard. Of course, the Mark Duggan trail couldn't really be transformed into a glitter and sparkle trail, but Rillington Place, the Music Awards, Sports Personality could have been. The launch lacked the usual "IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!" cry out in my view and seemed to be launched on a whim. BBC iPlayer and BBC Three or III were over promoted last night and having non-festive trails when you're meant to be in festive mode seemed and felt a bit flat.

I do think though that the idents do capture the "Moments we share" message quite well though.

For less than pleasant production values - idents actually serve the purpose of spending time at Christmas with family and friends.

I'd agree with your point about some trails not using the Christmas design. I'd understand Lawful Killing: Mark Duggan to not use it considering the seriousness of the subject but other programmes such as Sports Personality of the Year should have been used.

I do also apologise for the over the top post I put in previously last night - I only seemed to go mental over the idents without taking on board the positive aspects.

Having only seen the bald head and the news ident, I don't see what the problem is they embody the spirit of watching BBC One at Christmas, they're flexible, christmassy and well shot.

Featuring celebrities, real or animated, instantly dates the idents. Having normal people is unimaginative. As I've said before, using people makes idents look generic, corporate and bland. A guy with a red-nosed reindeer jumper is tacky and screams "hipster" or "idiot manly bloke with the lads" to me. The bauble one is nice but unoriginal; it was done better in 1998 and in Northern Ireland a few years ago.

This is the trouble with the Circles and the Dancers; there's no unifying symbol like a globe or balloon or numeral 2 or whatever. People doing things does not an ident make. It's lazy. This year's idents look like they could come from any channel or indeed any advert.

Graphics are perfect when done right and made to not look cheap with generic CGI or looped animation. There has been a sad decline in hand-crafted idents using stop motion or similar. BBC2 in 1993 is the best example. Those looked like time, effort and care had gone into them. These don't.

That's what I want. Some care and magic to go into them. Not corporate blandness.

Not sure that would have been that appropriate for Rillington Place either. In fact there is a kind of connection between the two cases Confused

Well they've already said they're not showing them on the big day itself, so that pretty much tells us all we need to know about them.

They've not said that at all.
