Well they've already said they're not showing them on the big day itself, so that pretty much tells us all we need to know about them.

Hindsight and all that but how much better a position BBC1 would be in now had they just built a collection over the years beginning with Snowball and Penguins and then just adding a new one to the mix every year or two, but keeping the old ones alongside them too.

Updated verdict (damage is already done however):

BBC ONE's is cheap, bland, vapid and generic. But what it makes up for poor production values - it captures the spirit of Christmas as well. Animations are great by the way.

But BBC TWO goes the extra mile of s***e by being as fatalistic as 'the lads' and shoving the same 2011 ident into our eyes. Awful soundtrack as well.

Not as bad as the awful curtain of 2012 or the fatalistic approach of 2003 but ultimately disappointing.

They are terrible... even the nicest one is just a bauble hanging off a tree. To give it its due, the music is quite nice.

This is probably the second worst year of Christmas pres for BBC One. The worst is 2003 which is of course the year they re-ran the 2002 ident.

Is that it? Three idents in which two are absolutely s*** and one is half decent?

The BBC truly astounds me with what they deem as Christmas idents. An utter s***stain by far.

Worst seems too generous - this year's pres package is strenuous, fatalistic and downright crap.

But apart from that you quite like them? Wink

This ....

Christmas on BBC One sponsored by John Lewis.

I think the 2014 package was vastly underrated by many. I'd argue it was the last "BBC" feeling one.

There was no kitschy, mini-film, faux grandeuer attached to it either, unless my memory fails me.

The only positive is that the animation is decent - other than that it's as shockingly bad as 2003 where fatalism was rife amongst Christmas presentation for BBC ONE.

I'm starting my New Year resolutions early: avoid this thread for the duration of December!

Agree and it is something they could have built upon. The only bit I didn't like was the form up of the trees at the end of the idents - that could have been done a bit better IMO, but overall it worked well enough.

I decided against making a snap decision and letting my opinion simmer for a bit longer.

The idents aren't really that terrible, especially compared to the BBC Two re-dubs and a decapicated two-faced Santa Claus on a turntable. The problem is these ones are ridiculously forgettable in the same way that the red curtain was. It is comparable to ITV, but ITV stylise the shots in their idents to make them a little easier to watch - soft focus, slow pans etc. This is literally just a little snippet of average life with almost nothing else to it.

Hopefully, there'll be more than three waiting in the wings. And I'm also conscious of the BBC wanting to keep away from any accusations of p***ing away licence fee money on temporary branding and therefore opting for cheaper (looking) options. But surely there are simpler concept that are far more appealing to the eye that wouldn't cost all that much to make?

In conclusion, I think most of the disappointment comes from being spoilt by the BBC in the past, and we know that they can do so much better. But at least it's not a f***ing static red curtain.

No, there's one more, surely. Wink

Partygoers are arriving home, they open their front door, as it closes the holly wreath on the door falls off with a funny suction sound. Then the BBC One circle logo animates on screen.

...I wouldn't put it past them. Very Happy
