They just look odd now. At the time they kinda made sense as a concept, there was a sort of logic to it. But all these years later there isn't. You can imagine the design meeting today:
It's a balloon.... yep fine.
It's floating over landmarks.... well yes that's what balloons do
It's got a globe pattern on it..... why?
The globe is red and orange....... er, right
Urgh, sadly it would go like that now. Of course the concept was that it was bringing the world to every corner of the UK, and it was red and orange so as not to clash with the landscape.
Worth remembering the later balloon idents did have much more of a focus on people rather than just landscapes. The problem with the dancer idents was it's more difficult for a concept rather than a physical form to actually grab attention as a way to identify the channel - and even though they may have reflected some diversity boxes they just did not reflect BBC1 at the time. They came across as BBC1 trying to be cool and failing miserably.

Sophie Long was just doing a live piece to camera during the BBC News and a security guard, unhappy that the crew were broadcasting from their location, told her to basically stop and move on. She was trying to indicate to him that they were reporting live for the BBC News, while carrying on as best she could, but he was having none of it. An unscheduled early cut back to Kate Silverton in the studio where she gave an apology before moving on to the next story.

Talk about over zealous (the Security Guard that is).
Considering that Sophie and her crew must've been there for ages already, and he'd clearly not seen fit to move them on in all that time, and she was probably within 30 seconds of finishing anyway, the timing of his actions was arrogance of the highest order.

I would have thought, an organisation of the BBC's calibre, had probably sought approval to be there anyway. I thought the security guard was a total idiot. If he represents Chelsea football Club, he didn't do them any favours.

If the powers that be at the club/ground don't endorse his actions, then perhaps it will yet prove to be his "on-air resignation"?! (unintentionally, unlike a certain Mr A Towers in 1997)
