Well they didn't really answer that question. It's quite embarrassing the BBC are at a point where they've got people who weren't born when the idents debuted featuring in features about them.
It does feel like the BBC now treat presentation in exactly the same way as they treat EastEnders - they only care about it at Christmas.
It's also fascinating to see how play out is handled by the BBC, and how it's decided on how each one is played out.

It's a good thing they didn't do that feature with the current 25 year old BBC Two idents then, at least 10 years old wasn't that bad.

They didn't really.
The people who schedule the junctions don't sit in a control room* copy and pasting idents in to the automation a few minutes beforehand. I suspect most of the time which ident is used is just a case of choosing the one they haven't used recently.
Not the sort of dull answer that the kid was after though and not as fun or telly friendly
*they're not even in the same city or work for the same company

A personal guided tour?! I'm a tad jealous
Well it's great to see a new generation of ident fans coming through anyway!
Interesting to see a couple of the idents that never made it, I'd never really considered that many ideas have probably been rejected over the years. And certainly doesn't sound like they're in any hurry to drop them. As Andy Bryant and Charlie Mawer from Red Bee wrote in their The TV Brand Builders book...
I know some want to see the back of them but I'd quite happily keep them on screen for years to come.

Presenting the first batch of concepts to Peter Fincham and his team was one of the most joyful meetings of our careers. There was no debate, just an instant and unanimous recognition that the idea was a perfect fit for BBC One.

And only for their flagship channel. Two and Four are still using the same Christmas idents as in previous years. Three kept on doing this as well until it was rebranded at the beginning of the year.
At the scene of playout, it just showed the young kid put Dog Display in the schedule. They didn't answer a question, yes, but I mentioned about how playout is handled as shown in the segment briefly.

As far as how it's scheduled in the automated playout system, it looks as if it's been done beforehand. Doubt they'd ever change them a few minutes before, this only was done with the kid getting to play out Dog Display, in recognition of the fact that it's his favourite of the circle idents.

The baby one looked an awful idea and though the dog one looked fine I guess they didn't want two with dogs.
The presentation across the BBC needs looking at as a whole now, rather than them seeming to treat each element independently. If they overhauled BBC1's presentation they could probably still get away with the idents remaining as part of that overhaul, but that would not be my preference.
The money is clearly there now too - there is £15m a year they were willing to spend on Bake Off and now aren't, with any replacement likely to cost as little as a third of that. Even taking £1m from that pot would be enough to sort BBC1 and BBC2 out.

So to put it simply a 1991 style rebrand?

Take a grain of salt with rebranding BBC presentation - BBC Three, CBBC and Parliament have had dull rebrands, though I somehow like the CBBC idents. Parliament though was a letdown and Three was rushed clearly to get the closure of the linear channel and online move done quickly. CBBC's logo is a step down however.
