That was a nice surprise to see the hydro ident just now on BBC One Scotland. Someone given us a treat for its birthday. FYI hydro ident does appear every so often just not all the time and it can be weeks before it reappears.

I still think the current package of idents would be stronger if there had a few regional ones of circular locations like maybe Stirling castle, Cotswolds or if your really wanted it, Swindon magic Roundabout ha Very Happy

That Hydro ident could be back because of Still game. Its also strange seeing the English promo for Still game, Shocked

It's shown regularly before River City.

As The Insider said, this was the reason why it was temporarily withdrawn the first time around.

So Moon in itself hasn't been retired, only for an obituary ident when, for example, a royal's passing occurs.

Couldn't they slow down the flashing lights?

Slowing them down would have never helped. When Cavan mentioned about Windows being pulled due to too many flashing images, it's that it would negatively affect viewers with epilepsy. They were way too bright as well.

Maybe bring back the original full length playouts but perhaps with the trailer-style BBC One logo at the bottom that fades out before the swirls start. It would solve the problem of the branding being more visible and you get a cheap refresh. Plus bring back the 'rested' idents.

<stands back>

But, as much as I prefer the original versions, the way they are now, where they've basically, and sometimes ruthlessly (Kites, especially) taken a hatchet to the opening shots for a quick circle form-up allows the ident to be cut/faded out after just a few moments of it starting, surely the main reason for their introduction? The long versions wouldn't work if cut/faded out before the circle form-up and still showing a trailer-style logo at bottom during the opening shots IMO.

You misunderstand me. I did mean show the idents in full, but the sub logo fades out before the main logo swirls in. Similar to the darts ident on Two having the sub logo followed by the box logo.

No, I understood you correctly, Andrew. I just don't think having a duel logo placement ident, where sometimes the cut/fade out point would be during the display of the bottom trailer-style logo, and other times the cut/fade out point being during the circle logo with swirl would work all that well. It's a personal opinion. Nobody's 'right' or 'wrong'.

Moon was by far once of the nicest idents they did - a nice change of pace too and slightly more epic than the rest.

So of course they withdrew it.

They went to Croatia to make the Moon ident. If you spend that money you better bloody use it! It's like the insanity of BBC2's Window On The World idents having Chase shot in South Africa then they ditch it and keep using Sunroof!!! Shocked Moon is perfect for news or serious programming, shouldn't just be for funerals. Windows has great music too and it's a shame it's gone forever.

The full length idents are great. What's really irritating is that they couldn't be bothered to make better edits to these and keep the original music. The only updated music that works is for Helicopter.

BBC ONE Northern Ireland used the Moon ident after Holby last night.

That got me by surprise: I was told that its purpose was as an obit ident.

Perfect for serious programming and evening news. That's how Moon should be used. Once again BBC Northern Ireland gets it right.

BBC NI actually manages to take their presentation efforts seriously, compared to the idiocy shown by Network - hacking off the BBC ONE/TWO pres to bits was indicative of that. It's worse for BBC TWO though, where inconsistency rules.

And the total lack of logic from none other than Callum Precious...

Butchering entire pres packages with crap soundtracks and poor endboards, menu slides that are horribly proportioned, and BBC Two's branding inconsistency in promos does NOT characterise the Network as 'perfect'.

I'm normally left disappointed by BBC Scotland's continuity efforts in comparison to BBC Wales and especially BBC Northern Ireland, but they rose to the occasion tonight. Jack and Winston doing continuity was a nice little extra bonus, and the Glasgow BBC One Scotland ident before Still Game was nicely timed. I'm sure it's a recycled effort from the Commonwealth Games, but it was nice to see it make an appearance before a major show, and it would be nice to see it reappear every so often for major Scottish programming.
