I find that trailers, end boards and graphics can be very hit and miss on the BBC. Some are obviously HD but many are still in SD and noticeably so. Shouldn't all the HD channels use only HD material and the SD channels be down scales of them?

As I understand it, it's a contractual issue. Regular programme trails - i.e. those that are just clips of programmes are made in SD because that's how they were made when Red Bee (now Ericsson) were contracted to make them. Other more elaborate promos are different, they are in HD.

Though I believe this will change soon when the new contract kicks in. Lots of things that Ericsson/Red Bee did are being insourced back in-house to the BBC

If they did that, you'd be kissing goodbye to ALL of the BBC2 idents, considering they're 20 years old - are BBC1's even HD?

I meant more the graphics used rather than idents, such as the text on endboards or any animations such as the swirl etc which appear nice and crisp on some and soft and blurry on others. Any holding pages or single slide promos also appear in SD more often than not. It would be nice if they were all in HD. Even watching the BBC News, it's noticeable when, during a report, a statement or some form of text appears and it looks jaggedy, especially if an image/logo appears behind or beside it. Weren't these things checked before going on air? Did someone see them and think "yeah that looks OK"?

With the White Paper given the go-ahead by the BBC, I wonder if they have the peace of mind of even updating the pres for BBC One.

They clearly have been hampered with the furore relating to DQF and the Charter Renewal, with a review into the licence fee cost next year (I'd imagine that an increase could be likely).

There's a new Strictly ident, broadcast for the first time tonight, rather like the short-lived glitterball ident of 2009, only now the glitterballs are gold.

New Strictly ident for the 2016 season. This version, based on the first design, appears to have had much more attention paid to it, with an opulent, lavish look. Very impressive. Also, the 'O' of the BBC One logo animates in to the centre. Although this has been done in trails, AFAIK this is unprecedented in a BBC1 ident.

Bleh. I much prefer the multiple-circular-mask thing they do on the regular idents (it has some weird intersections if you watch it frame by frame but in motion it looks nice).

Still, I can imagine them doing it if by some miracle we get some new HD idents before they phase circles out entirely, if only for the sake of doing something different.

Nice update of the 2009 ident. Was surprised to see this and with the 'O' zooming in for an ident. They need to decide on a uniform BBC One style for idents. Red swirl? White swirl? Zooming 'O'? Anything can happen!

Anyway. Contrast and compare.

This could pass for a Christmas baubles ident!

Indeed.

Random thought but I had a flashback to spinning globes of the COW / virtual variety watching this new ident.

It does bear a passing resemblance to the Christmas 1981 ident

Well the Christmas idents do start earlier every year.

Prefer the 2009 version myself.

I wonder if that was produced by the new BBC Creative rather than Red Bee? Maybe a hint or nod to a possible update on the cards especially with the way the 'O' appears on screen. Probably wishful thinking though!
