Callum Precious has snooped over on the BBC Two thread, with this enlightening information:
'they might show Star Wars and 007 films for the first time if only BBC One may get a new look'
ITV hold the rights for 007 films - and I remember that they also had FTA rights for the Star Wars films, so no. Also FTA rights to movies doesn't connect to refreshing presentation.
Switched over to BBC One and thought they'd done the unthinkable there...

As for new BBC One presentation, it'll be up to the controller of BBC TV whether to give hints on retiring the Circles. It's been the case previously with the axing of the balloon in 2002, and the Rhythm & Movement package being axed in 2006.

They were shot on film, certainly. If the original film rushes existed there's no reason why they couldn't be rescanned....

I for one would be pleased to see the return of the globe ident as in the original COW not the later messy look from the 90's.

They were shot on film, certainly. If the original film rushes existed there's no reason why they couldn't be rescanned....

As I understand it only the original set of idents had the balloon actually there. For the later ones it was found to be much easier to key it in. So presumably any HD version would need that compositing to be redone.

Similarly the 1991 BBC2 idents were shot on film. For widescreen they cropped the picture to approximately 14:9 and then stretched the picture on the left and right to fill the screen, which is why on the post-1997 idents the 2 appears to be a lot bigger and in a different place on the screen.
