Yeah, its not as if it's of no interest to anyone outside the south west. There's a lot of regional and 'national' BBC programmes that could be shown across the UK, after all there are slots with low or no budget to fill.

I suspect the thing about putting that out nationally on primetime BBC is that it's not mainstream enough. Something like Rip Off Britain will rate a lot better. A documentary about the south west path will do well locally and fit better in a BBC4 evening

That's true, a PSC programme can be done in HD with one HD camera and a laptop these days.

I wonder how long it will be before some of the regional studios which turn up on network get an HD upgrade, such as Leeds (SuperLeague Show) and Bristol (occasional SeeHear and others)

Why have the BBC suddenly started pre recording Saturday Kitchen rather than being live? (I have no idea if they used to do this in the James Martin era although I did find an article from 2007 where they got in trouble for it due to the phone in and they said then all future episodes would be live)

Thought they might have found a permanent presenter by now too, then again Bargain Hunt is still rotating the experts as presenters...

The regional BBC South series about Southampton docks and port (Sea City) was rapidly shown again nationally on BBC 2, and I think also again Sunday afternoons on BBC 1 ?

There used to be a stand called UK Direct - on News 24 I think - which gave a national airing to regional documentaries. Looking at genome regional docos used to turn up on the network quite frequently, with a "Previously shown on BBC 2 North West" or similar note in the Radio Times.

Certainly BBC Four had repeated BBC Yorkshire documentaries which have been shown in opt out slots. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were joint commissions with some contribution to the funding from the network - if only to cover any increased cost of producing in HD

Would it necessarily cost that much to produce in HD?

It's pretty much the standard nowadays if it's an outside commission and unless the regional features production teams haven't upgraded their facilities in the last 10 years they will have HD capability (I know one edit suite bought for Inside Out was possible of doing HD about 10 years ago before there was even an HD channel).

Though of course there is extra cost in making a programme like that. I'd hope they'd get some funding in return for a network slot. It would still work out very a very cheap half hour for BBC4

I think most English Regions 'Inside Out' programmes are shot in HD (most BBC regions are using HD-capable Sony PMWs for acquisition) or can be, and many of them are edited in HD, as they rotate which region is used on BBC One HD in England. In terms of editing - I think most English Regions cut Inside Out in dedicated FCP (or similar) edits rather than on their Quantel edits (which are there for news)

Some 'Inside Out' stories have also featured on The One Show in HD.

I think the BBC have the right strategy. Regardless of the quality of the show ITV networking what are essentially regional shows (The Dales, The Lakes etc.) is just as tedious.

Yes, I agree. If they networked regional shows you'd also then get people complaining that they don't do regional shows anymore because they're shown nationally rather than as opt-outs, so showing them first locally and then nationally at a later date is probably the better way.

They're not suddenly pre-recording it, the episodes this, last and next week have been deliberately sold as "Summer Specials" and are pre-recorded. The point, presumably, is because given it's on 52 weeks of the year, pre-recording a couple of them allows the production team to have a bit of a holiday. Same as when SMTV used to be on 52 weeks a year but would be pre-recorded a couple of times a year to give everyone a break. August is the obvious time to do it. You may wish to compare it to previous years where they've shown clip shows in August.

If they're upfront about the fact it's pre-recorded and don't invite viewers to contribute, there's no problem.

If only they'd been a major event in recent weeks where the show could have gone off air for three weeks to give additional coverage to it on BBC1.

Was there much going on in the Olympics at 6am Rio time, then?
