A rare opt out for BBC One South West & CI over the next few weeks starting tonight. While the rest of the country gets an episode of Rip Off Britain at 7:30, viewers in the South West and Channel Islands get a programme all about the South West Coastal Path!

Pretty rare indeed. These days, is it technically possible for the CI not to take the SW opt?

No, playout is through Plymouth for BBC CI.

I'm sure it could be done with a bit of replugging either at Plymouth or the Coding and Mux facility, if there was any real need to.

Jersey took the BBC News sustaining feed when there were 'problems' in Plymouth that prevented their usual opt (something was lashed together from Bristol, but CI didn't see any of that).

I presume it's theoretically possible for Jersey to stick Net 1 as an outside source on their local vision mixer and opt out of Plymouth (but with the network programme) should the need arise.

I suspect that Jersey might opt into a dirty feed from Plymouth rather than having Net1 available.

There's a clip on TV Ark of a couple of BBC One South West regional closedowns from 1994/1996 when the network schedule was time shifted following a regional programme. Sadly that sort of thing probably wouldn't happen these days.

It still does very occasionally:

In this case Leeds added an extra programme reacting to something in the news and network couldn't provide something for them to opt out of, so they had to time shift. Possibly the only example with Christmas idents in recent memory.

A slightly earlier (and less polished) example where Manchester provided timeshifted pres which Leeds and Newcastle also opted back into following their separate regional Sports Personality shows.

Blimey that second video is terrible - white menu and "Watch Dog" and "Antiques Road Show"!

I suspect RedBee were quite glad that Manchester went to the trouble of creating a BBC One North red box so it was obvious that the shambles wasn't a network production

Are we expecting any form of ident refresh this year at all? The circle idents have served the channel well but they really are looking tired now.

Surely commissioning single idents for Christmas/Olympics etc is more expensive than updating the whole set?

Even if they refreshed the images/ VT used on the idents but kept the circles theme it would certainly improve things.

Didn't the BBC launch BBC Creative(?) who would be responsible for this sort of thing?

It'll be ten years this October since the last major BBC One rebrand, and ten years the following February since the last major BBC Two rebrand. Hopefully they'll do something sooner than later now we're past the the charter renewal, or at least the main worry of what the charter renewal was going to be like.

Sadly they just don't seem to care anymore - the stings are proof of that.
