It was, and the emphasis on stories from around the UK from the presenters of early editions seems to confirm that.

I remember Chris Moyles used to call it Blue Peter for adults, and that was before Matt joined.

The Nationwide-esque nature of The One Show at the start was also suggested by the presenters referring to the show going right around the country at the beginning of each edition, something that has been lost as the show established itself. Now it's more of a rather clumsy hybrid chatshow with some random features.

And if you remember, there was no junction between the regional news and The One Show in its 2006 run. The region would hand-over directly and then there would be a round-up of the national and local news from the regional teams at the end of the programme.

It still has the Nationwide style remit in that it features stories from across the country, and just those from the UK

Switched over to BBC One and thought they'd done the unthinkable there...

I would literally go mental if Callum Precious came out with a statement.

The balloon idents much more timeless than the BBC2 idents IMO.

Plus using advances in CGI over the years they could make gorgeous realistic looking scenes for a balloon return though of course the real balloon would be very much welcomed.

It was surely the point of the balloon idents to show off the actual beauty of the country. Recreating that in CGI would be daft. And it'd probably be far cheaper, too, to send a few drones up at a few beauty (/architecturally interesting) spots and CGI in the balloon.

In fact...

(since I'm never going to get around to finishing the bloody thing and April 1st is miles off)

The later examples were done by compositing footage of the balloon onto a nice shot. I think it was only the original batch that were filmed with the balloon at the location.

I would imagine that footage of the balloon against a clear blue sky would have been easy enough to key.

Random thought but has there been any update on whether this new series of The Great British Bake-Off will be the final one we see on the BBC?

No. I'd be surprised though to see it move and if it does I suspect it would be without the talent.

A rare opt out for BBC One South West & CI over the next few weeks starting tonight. While the rest of the country gets an episode of Rip Off Britain at 7:30, viewers in the South West and Channel Islands get a programme all about the South West Coastal Path!
