If you went with comedy as a filler it would have to be something pretty bland otherwise you are risking all sorts of compliance issues. It's one thing making sure something scheduled has no gags about people who have recently become controversial or recently died, but for a filler you want something that can be thrown on air without having to think about whether it will offend anybody.

Live programmes are the greatest risk of coming out early our falling off air, so you need a mix of fillers for different situations.

The Nigel Slater stuff works well for the likes of the One Show or maybe even the news, but maybe not for Saturday prime time. Somebody suggested some Strictly cuts which could work well. Possibly some greatest goal compilations for around MOTD and sports OBs.

I wasn't suggesting Coast is a suitable replacement for all BBC 1 programmes, it's not (nor is it for all BBC 2 stuff either). However if Countryfile were to fall off the air for instance........

Look what they showed to fill a gap the other week...

Strictly would cost too much I suspect (you'd have artist and musician repeat fees if you included dancing and singing) and MOTD may have rights issues (depends how long you can keep the archive on the shelf without having to re-edit)

If you're thinking of Premier League footage that'd be a non starter.

I believe the times the BBC can show footage are:
After 10pm on a Saturday (and before 10am on a Sunday)
After 10pm on a Sunday* (until Midnight I think)
After 10:30pm on a midweek*
During 'Football Focus' on a Saturday lunchtime.

(*= MOTD2 can be moved to a Monday night if there is a 'big' game that night, I believe that may have to be a special request. Otherwise for a Tuesday or Wednesday edition there has to be more than six games played across those two days or if there isn't that number they can ask permission is if the games are 'high profile', likely to be title deciders etc. There has to be an hour gap between the end of any live Sky / BT game before highlights can be shown- so in the past they've had to fill until 10:45pm with other highlights, even if they'd rather start with that nights 'big' game.)

There are a few exceptions but outside of those times you might as well be a non rights holder- any usage would require payment to the Premier League (if they gave permission). The only football they might be able to use as a filler Is a 'Best of the FA Cup' type compilation as those rights are much less restrictive. Even so there might still be problems. I've a feeling World Cup and European Chmapionship footage is also restricted (similar to the way Olympic footage is) outside of a period either side of a tournament.

Precisely. There's a reason Coast and other factual shows are the usual fillers - as they cost far less to repeat than entertainment shows, and sport content is a rights minefield. You would struggle to produce a reasonable sport highlights show that could sit on the shelf (other than a Question of Sport type programme)

The obvious, in hindsight at least, thing they could have shown last week is the Some Mothers Do Ave Em Sport Relief special which was about the right length.

A minor playout error on BBC1 Wales earlier, very nicely recovered by the announcer ad-libbing on the spot:

Maybe that's a sneak peak at the new look BBC1.

Following the 6:30 regional news on BBC One this evening I turned over to BBC One HD expecting to see the party political broadcast (not that I particularly wanted to). However instead of seeing the PPB I saw a modified version of the "we are unable to show your regional news programme in HD" slide which said something on the lines of "In order to see tonight's party political broadcast please switch to BBC One SD". I wouldn't have thought PPB's are localised in the English Regions, although I know they are in the Nations but they have their own HD channels so does anyone know the reason they aren't broadcast on the BBC One HD and if that has always been the case?

EDIT: Could it be something to do with the Channel Islands?

According to the BBC website, there was a different PPB in the London region to the rest of England (which included the Channel Islands).

London's PPB was for the London Mayoral elections.
