Has anybody picked on Dean's announcement in the first ident saying that "it's going to be a year of surprises". I wonder what this could mean.

I'm glad someone picked up on that! We are indeed promised more "stuff", although I don't know many more details. There are some as-yet-unseen blips sitting on the server, though...

For what it's worth, I wasn't sure about the new symbols at first, but they've *really* grown on me, and I like them a lot now.

I think it would be nice if they were here to stay. The circle idents look tired now. BBC1's pres looks like an old familiar living room with wallpaper hanging down in need of redecoration. These new animations are a perfect compromise and should be kept permanently.

I think the stings would be fine if the logo was scaled down a bit. Its just too big and in your face. Also I think it would be better if the text and BBC blocks were white instead of faded.

One thing i've been wondering, why is it when BBC One has special pres they include stings, but with the ordinary stuff they don't use them. Unless they did use them but I can't picture them if they did.

Would people have preferred them if they were made up of live action clips similar to the scenes that have been animated, or would that be similar to ITV1 January 2006?

I find it painfully ironic that so many people use live action for their idents during a time when branding needs to be as prominent and unique as possible to stand out amongst the hundreds of television channels we have nowadays.

BBC One, BBC Two, ITV and Channel 4 are all (or were, as of 2015) guilty of this. BBC One could only distinguish itself with vague circular shapes, BBC Two did so by poking a '2' shaped hole through things, ITV just have their logo fade up, and Channel 4 do the same thing but with a more creative reveal. I know mechanical and animated idents are considered "old fashioned" nowadays, but live action branding is just becoming horrifically common.

The exception to live action idents were the magnificent BBC One Balloon Idents. Very short lived.

Back to basics, 1974 to 81, a f**ing great BBC 1 on the screen, leaving NO ONE in any doubt, ironically there were only two other channels Very Happy

Thankful BBC2, have reverted back to old fashioned Wink animated logo, I dont think its fair to say Ch4 place it in the same league, as you say its creative, in the content of modern world.

ITV is just meh, its the same concept over and over again since 2005? People doing stuff. What I do mist is the strange ident/promo 10 sec thing running with no CA into shows. I think ITV are missing a trick with not having these, IE NOT these IE updated 2015 version etc...... It could also work for the BBC?

They used to use stings all the time, before the balloon idents launched (i.e. 20 years ago!). They were much like the 2 idents, but of course used the number 1 as seen on their main ident at the time.

They used stings with the balloons as well didn't they?

Yes there did.

Yes. They had lots of short balloon stings. I would see one and think "Why didn't they use that one as a main ident?". It was when the wretched dancer idents (Lorraine Heggessey, I'll never forgive you for ditching the balloon in favour of these) started that stings ended, except for Christmas.

Stings were created for the original batch of 'Dancer' idents. Apart from a handful of outings on BBC One Northern Ireland, I don't believe these stings were used by BBC Network/Scotland/Wales.

A fourth sting spotted on BBC One Northern Ireland at lunchtime. Looked vaguely like green dirt being sucked up by a hoover - with the end of the hoover pipe forming the 'o' of 'one'.
