The sting above isn't the one I saw. The one I was referring to just has the Tardis flying on the right side of the screen, with the usual red background.

If you mean the now / later red menu screen with background music playing and the Tardis floating by on the right, that's definitely been in use for some time now.

I wonder if they'd get away with "doing a BBC Two" and reinstating the balloons. I imagine they still look good enough for today's eyes and they still have the red theme (albeit with orange).

Why would they? They're not iconic, and I wonder how many people actually remember them.

Personally, I never loved them.

Nobody likes the dancers and anything before the balloon is too old fashioned. It's a cheap and easy way to "refresh" the presentation.

Some pretty pictures of a balloon floating above the UK countryside was nice 18 years ago, but it's hardly suitable for modern presentation. The BBC Two idents of the same era were much more varied, dynamic and "playful" - things which mean they don't look out of place used in today's channel landscape.

You say the stuff before the balloons is too old fashioned, but the exact same is true of the balloons themselves, despite how revered they are on here.

How on earth did you pass the TV Forum membership test?

I would love it if they "did a BBC Two" and brought the balloon ident package back!

At least they have some relevance to them - for example with the St Michaels Mount ident, people who have visited there can relate to it and say I've been there!

The balloons would look stunning in HD and some new ones could easily be filmed over some new locations... For example around where I am, an ident of the balloon flying over Cardiff Bay could be amazing or over the Millennium Stadium or Cardiff Castle...

Even my friend the other day (who usually takes no notice whatsoever of TV presentation or idents) turned to me when the hippos swimming in formation ident came on and said "how many years have they been showing this? Seems like forever! It's soooo boring now!"

If my calculations are correct, we have just passed another milestone - the circle idents have now been with us longer than the balloons and the dancers combined !

Indeed. They have been with us now since Saturday 7th October 2006.

Does this then make them the longest identity package BBC1 has had in its history?

From what I can tell... Yes it is.

I think the NODD blue and yellow mirror globe used from 1974-1985 would probably count as the longest lasting on-air symbol (despite it being tweaked a couple of times - and it didn't have an identity package as such built around it).

Anyone know if the balloon still around? I know it used to crop up at various balloon festivals but I would guess it's probably been retired by now.
