Has anybody picked on Dean's announcement in the first ident saying that "it's going to be a year of surprises". I wonder what this could mean.

They're rebooting Don't Scare The Hare.

Probably nothing, every year is a year of surprises!

... it's gone downhill ever since [2002]. 1999-2000 was the peak.

Channel 4 2004.

I should've said "with some notable exceptions".

Even in 16:9 it still barely fits:

While I agree most now watch on a widescreen TV, the safe areas do still exist for a reason.
If someone posted this on the Gallery there'd be hell on.

Surely the captured image is already 16:9 so the red line should be around the border therefore plenty of space.

If I'm understanding you correctly, no. The red rectangle is the safe area, meaning that essential parts of graphics for 16:9 should be put inside it to ensure that it displays on everyone's TV screens. Put essential graphics outside the red rectangle and you might find they're cut off on some sets due to weird cropping, overscan etc, so you should only put non-essential graphics there.

I'll tell you what the music reminds me of - Max Richter's 'recomposing' of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Very similar minimalist approach to this ident music, I think.

I do like this package - quite charming and a nice start to the new year. Not strong enough to be permanent, mind, but it doesn't look like they are going to be, so I think we're alright.

The red line is 16:9 graphics safe, not 16:9 total active area. UK Graphics safe for 16:9 is 5% in from top and bottom and 10% in from left and right of 16:9 total active area.

The idents remind me of something that's been used before years ago and it's really bugging me as I can't remember what.

I'm glad someone picked up on that! We are indeed promised more "stuff", although I don't know many more details. There are some as-yet-unseen blips sitting on the server, though...

For what it's worth, I wasn't sure about the new symbols at first, but they've *really* grown on me, and I like them a lot now.

Kind of reminds me of this Channel 5 ident - the way the circle is used and transitions:

The stings are a bit in your face aren't they. No issue with them not being 4:3 safe, but in this case I think keeping them smaller just would mean they look a bit better rather than catering to the small minority still watching in 4:3.

Do we know who created these - I'm assuming they're done in house. Do just think that with a little bit of extra work they could have gone all out and done a full ident set probably relatively cheaply too.
