BBC One London crashed into a network trailer just before 7pm with a local ident that used Gill Sans for the 'London' text. How? Why? They presumably have the correctly branded ident into news bulletins?

Ooh, ooh, ooh, I know this having just moved to London. They don't use regional idents into news bulletins.

Yes BBC One Network doesn't have 'London' underneath, but I'm sure a regional ident is used before the likes of Inside Out and Late Kick Off.

It is, with pre-recorded continuity.

In the case of Late Kick Off , BBC ONE London and BBC ONE South East both aired the same regional variant of the programme, meaning that they would show an ident with a "London & South East" region identifier.

I'm pretty certain that network do the idents into the News, and BBC One London take them (and don't opt out). They only opt out for idents into Inside Out and specific regional opt-outs?

Is London the sustaining feed for LKO or do they put up a different region on HD each week like Inside Out?

If it's not sustaining Tunbridge Wells would have to opt out so playing an ident with SE branding is little hardship.

Why doesn't London opt out for its own news idents, I assumed before it was because London was the sustaining feed and they didn't actually opt out, but that isn't the case anymore is it?

Unless something has changed, I don't think BBC London can soft-opt, as they don't have a feed of network. This means they are crash opting, which makes it trickier to do clean transitions, so I guess they keep them to a minimum?

(All the other regions can soft-opt by putting Network through their vision mixer and then routing themselves to the transmitter - effectively opting out of the direct network feed, but without the viewer noticing. The actual opt-out is then done by mixing/cutting away on the local studio's vision mixer. For a while it was only really possible to cut - as the digital chains were cuts only and slaved by red lights to the analogue feed - but I think this has now changed since digital became the only outlet)

Which is odd, given they are the largest (in terms of population) region or nation. I can only imagine
it's still tied down to the fact Crystal Palace is still regarded as being a transmitter that's rather 'special'
for national security reasons.

Though I'd have thought, the Beeb would have wanted the path between NBH/BH and CP to have
a minimum of other locations to pass through first, and not rely of third parties such as Red Bee and ATOS
to always be circuit (should there be a 'problem')

Is CP still that special since DSO? Previously the idea was that if you could get a signal out of CP you could, if you were desperate, have that rebroadcast to the rest of the country through RBS, but that is no longer in place now we're all digital.

Very true, but possibly the only place outside of London that's got any 'importance' is Chipping Norton Very Happy

I actually think my generation (50s) is the last to automatically turn to TV should there be an emergency. Twitter and fb should be fine, shouldn't they ? Rolling Eyes
