Most times I see them handover, they just join whenever. I've seen them cross over half way through a report countless times.

Some regional variations on BBC One tonight at 7.30, with A Question of Sport being replaced.
Yorkshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, North West and North East are all showing a series about the Pennine Way. It will be interesting to see if they all get the same continuity or do their own thing.
At the same time, South and Oxford have a documentary about Aysha King.
At least in that slot they should be able to conceal network plugs for QoS easily enough. They would just need to either do their own now/next menu after the regional news or extend the regional news slightly and opt back after the menu, possibly do their own ident into the One Show (or at least get NC1 to not mention QoS). The One Show doesn't have an ECP to contend with, so just a case of opting off the back of it to avoid the network now/next.
I think Leeds might be playing out the programme for the northern regions, I think they made it. We know from the regional close down they treated us to a few months back that they care about doing pres properly, so you never know, we could be in for some rareties tonight.

What happens when BBC One joins News Channel overnight depends very much on the timings, the Director in the chair, and the Editor. Though yes, to be honest, it's often just a crash in these days.
Current versions of the News Channel countdown still exist in NC1 (and are updated regularly), so if we're due to hit near the top of the hour, we can still run our own version of the countdown like in the old days and join for the headlines. If we're due to hit just past the top of the hour, if possible we delete trails and join bang on the top. This isn't always possible though - sometimes I've had to join News Channel at one and a half minutes past, which gave me an itchy testicle.
If we're due to join near the half hour, we can contact News Channel and arrange an opt in point. That's slightly trickier than it sounds, though - News Channel timings have a tendency to drift, which can make things a bit tricky in NC1. So some people just fade to News Channel automatically.
If we're due to join News Channel when they're in the middle of a report, we can run a non-numbered version of the countdown, communicate with News Channel over talkback, and join when they cut to the presenter. A lot of people just fade down and up into the report, though.
Finally, there's the time when we cut in bang in the middle of something like HARDtalk. There's nothing we can do if that's the case. Ideally, we'd have some fillers we could use to fill to the half hour or top of the hour, and I believe we used to have some in the old days. Nowadays, sadly, we don't.
How does the opt into the NC on BBC One overnight usually work? Is it a case of timing it so BBC One joins at half past for the bottom-of-the-hour headline summary, or is it always like it was tonight, where BBC One plays out the bottom-of-the-hour titles, and then fades into whatever the NC is showing? Seemed a bit odd to just fade into the middle of a HARDtalk programme!

Given five regions are opting out, I'm assuming the network would have the wit not to mention A Question of Sport at all.
Should have seen the BBC1 logo Look North Hull used to promote The Pennine Way...

Kites ident without regional identifier used across the Pennine Way opt out regions.

Plenty of people in Sheffield that use the Belmont transmitter, (and therefore get Mr Levy's 'wrong' news programme) and it touches places further west actually on the Pennines

I'm surprised Look north Hull are showing it full stop, as the Pennine Way is outside their region.

Thank you for the very insightful post NC5 - I've seen all of those methods used, although the best was BBC One joining just as the trundle cam started.
Just out of interest, is there a reason BBC One doesn't still close down with the National Anthem before joining? I only ask because Radio 4 do that every day just before they join the World Service at 01:00.

No worries! I try and let people know what I can.
I'm afraid I don't have an answer about the National Anthem - that was way before I joined. I don't doubt that the issue was kicked around and discussed and argued about for ages, though...

I guess one issue with the anthem is what to do visually. It always used to be played over the globe symbol, in one form or another. I don't think a loop of the current idents would be appropriate.
You can't really use a shot of a flag, that is what news do in obit mode. I guess you could do something with the footage of the Queen opening NBH like some ITV regions had shots of the Royal family on their patch? Or I suppose you could film a military band or orchestra playing the anthem and just show the musicians.
None of these have the straightforward simplicity of the announcer mixing to the globe and playing a cart.

I can't remember which year it was, and I've been trying to look for footage of it online, but I remember one year during the Laserdisc BBC1 ident era, the Christmas ident was deemed to be unsuitable to play with the National Anthem, so a still photo of the Queen replaced the ident with the anthem at closedown.
