I love it when people think broadcasters should spend large amounts of money on branding because they're bored with seeing the idents or they think the package needs 'freshening up'.

In this period coming to charter review, the BBC would be seriously questioned if they brought in new idents. The main focus now is making sure as much of the BBC's money as possible can be seen onscreen in the programmes.

Idents are cheap comparatively. It is a myth that everyone is outraged when new idents are produced. It is only usually Daily Mail. The last time the Charter was up for renewal was in 2006 and in October of that year, we got new idents. It didn't affect the charter renewal then. Sometimes a rebrand is necessary regardless of when it happens. If £300,000 is spent on an ident package, each time the idents are shown for around 30 times every day for a minimum of 4 years. An episode of a drama costs £800,000 for 60 minutes. The money issue is irrelevant. They don't always use agencies.

The BBC is a bit timid at the moment, after the Jimmy Saville, and the editing of the Queen - not to mention a hostile government who would love nothing better than the BBC shutting up shop, or being reserved to Theatre and Arts shows, with no appeal to the public.

The press would jump on it, and give the government the excuse it needs to chop them down all the more.

I suspect it is one of the reasons BBC Three is to go, and BBC Four remains.

If they can create the January 2015 idents so quickly and in house, some tweaking to them and the addition of some other themed ones for spring/summer/autumn and perhaps Easter and there you go. A refresh of the brand at minimal cost. It gives them something new to show in the interim so that if they want to do a full rebrand of the channel after the Charter review when the channel has been (possibly) been given more money to spend on content, which of course the look of the channel is an important part of the content.

Good point. And a rebranding can do wonders for the direction of the channel and broadcaster, in this case, the BBC.

The Beeb seems to have lost direction over the last few years. Firstly, the idents for its main 2 channels have either been going for the longest time, or they've brought them back from the dead. I love the 90's 2, and am glad to see them back, but it is very unusual, and doesn't exactly tell the viewer about what the channel's future is to be.

Secondly, the Beeb seems slow to react to criticism, or says nothing at all. The licence fee is great value for what we get, it's just that they have got too big. People seem to be complaining more about why they should have to pay the licence fee and the Beeb don't seem to be voicing loudly about what the public get from it. This makes it easy for others to attack it. They're making life easier for the Daily Mail.

Getting back on topic, they really need to modernise BBC 1 and 2. It's not just about the idents, but these will help get the channels into the new decade.
