I have to say this, cheaply produced presentation has improved BBC One, it has also made the channel have a bit more fun, ie like the 2's . I think we have settled down to four regular menus and bumpers plus Football and Voice for certain days.
Are we back to the circle idents then? I don't like them, or the 2015 ones, but if I had to pick one to see on screen, it would be the 2015 ones as they are new. The circle idents are mostly boring and are old now. Time for a freshen up methinks. BBC ONE needs a symbol and it should be the base of idents and menus etc. They had it in the 90's and it is sorely missed. BBC TWO shows that they can be successful if done right and can be endearing to the public, if ONE had that they would be on to a winner.
I think if they had made a few more variations then those animated idents could have easily gone on all year. But I think just having two wasn't enough, I think a minimum of five would have been good to begin with, then they could have added a few more throughout the year. Shame they didn't continue with them.
I love it when people think broadcasters should spend large amounts of money on branding because they're bored with seeing the idents or they think the package needs 'freshening up'.
In this period coming to charter review, the BBC would be seriously questioned if they brought in new idents. The main focus now is making sure as much of the BBC's money as possible can be seen onscreen in the programmes.

Yet the BBC are able to every December & January. We've just had new idents and pres for January, which were then promptly consigned to the dustbin. That seems a bigger waste.

You make a good point.
I can only imagine that the temporary idents are produced quite cheaply in-house, whereas a full rebrand would usually go to external agencies and cost a lot more.
I don't get the appeal of these idents tbh. They are better than the Love idents, but that wasn't difficult. Even if they produced 10 variations, they be stale within a year. The Xmas idents were far better and they got a week less airtime, I'd rather they were on longer, than pointless January idents.

I liked the Christmas idents as well, but are you saying you'd like them to be played after the Christmas period ended, and well into January?

Why not? The Twelve Days of Christmas start with Christmas Day and don't end until Epiphany.
There's a better case for showing them at the beginning of January than the beginning of Advent.
