Well that's more to do with the stubbornness of the residents than anything else. They should really have used "Greater Manchester" but the southern end didn't want to loose their posh claim to Cheshire. And Warrington's in Cheshire anyway, though was formally in Lancashire.

Hehe Laughing I know what you mean Ash...but 'Greater Manchester' never actually existed as a postal area, so most areas clung on to the old counties. I also seem to recall the locals claiming to be in Oldham, Lancs when I lived there, so it wasn't just the South Manchester types!

On a more useless practical level, I remember my eccentric great Aunt having the 'Stockport MBC' sign outside her land in Disley ripped out of the ground in the dead of night whenever the council redrew the border (often). It placed her outside Cheshire, I'm not sure whether the sign was a mistake or she objected to paying rates aswell!

You are wrong. Greater Manchester still exists as a county although not as a political unit because the County Council was disbanded in 1988. .

Manchester IS in Lancashire, as I lived there for four years. Our address was Prestwich, Manchester, Lancashire, M25. Parts of the old 'Greater Manchester' were part of Cheshire at one point but aren't anymore, they come under Lancashire too. The county of Lancashire was extended in 1988 to cover Manchester, Salford and other parts of the old 'GM' area.

Even at the BBC it's classed as Lancashire. The post office class it as Lancashire, as does most Postcode search software.

I did explain the postcode issue with Manchester in a previous post, it's not necessary to repeat it.

However, if you need confirmation that Greater Manchester County actually borders with Lancashire then please see this item

Actually Prestwich is one of the 6 towns of BURY within Greater Manchester! I should well know as I come from Bolton and lived in Bury MBC for quite a few years! To be honest Bury is very mixed up as I lived in Bury with a Bolton phone number and a Manchester postcode but the council tax ALWAYS went to Bury MBC.

The postcode situation is explained above in an earlier post.

The 10 true MBC's in GREATER MANCHESTER are:-

Wigan (Lancashire), Bolton (Lancashire), Bury (Lancashire), Rochdale (Lancashire), Oldham (Lancashire), Tameside (never quite sure whether this was a new MBC or wehther they were in Lancashire or Cheshire), Stockport (cheshire), Trafford (Cheshire), Salford (Lancashire) and Manchester (Lancashire)

Postcodes and phone numbers of neighbouring MBC's may slip into each other but these 10 are their own towns/cities that make up "Greater Manchester"

I was born in Bolton, Lancashire and my sister was born in Bolton, Greater Manchester - go figure that. But I still write Bolton, Lancashire because Boltonians HATE being part of anything that comes from Manchester.

Anyway City of Manchester is far bigger than ity of London, as City of London is only 1 sq mile in size!!!!!!!

Given the existence of BBC Radio Humberside, the way in which the BBC classify areas isn't that great an indicator of where an area is.

Postcodes are done in such a way as to facilitate the routing of mail, based on the internal structure of Royal Mail. As an example, Grimsby has a postcode of DN32, which is clearly nowhere near Doncaster.

Also if you do a postcode search you'll know that royal mail don't use counties anymore. As I said before, using "Lancashire" or "Cheshire" or whatever is just a hangover from where the boroughs used to lie. It's also not quite as simple as saying Trafford is in Cheshire, only South Trafford use Cheshire as it's only parts of the borough south of the river Mersey. The fact that people write it in their postcode doesn't make it right. Many in the former Humberside still use that name, irrelevant of the fact that it no longer exists.

Don't forget Greater Manchester has its own BBC local radio station - formerly known as BBC GMR and now just BBC Radio Manchester

Oh well in less than 5 years this discussion won't be happening as the BBC will not be based in City of Manchester but in City of Salford Laughing at Salford Quays Media City (with, hopefull, ITV)

I fail to see what chocolate has to do with this. I don't know WHY they put Topics into Celebrations anyway since no-one likes them.

I fail to see what the size of a city has to do with this.
