This thread is mainly about how TV production has ceased everywhere but Manchester and London. Ever since the tragic loss of Pebble Mill, TV production in Birmingham and the Rest of the country - Excluding Manchester, London and the nations - stopped. It affects everyone when all you hear are Manx accents and dialect on TV.

Lets look at the productions coming from BBC Birmingham:

PoV
Doctors
Daziel and Pascoe
Countryfile
Coast
Afternoon Play
To Buy or not to Buy
and
The Archers
Underlined and Italic means Produced for OU
Please feel free to post what is happening in your region

Seems you are a little jealous of Manchester as culturally it enjoys a higher status then Birmingham, I was the same at your age though, you will learn to live with it, in time.

I just think that they could tine down the dialects in some of their productions, I mean Manchester only has one culture and that is the Gun culture. I went to my uncle's funeral in Manchester and within the 30 mins we were in the church some one was shot in the street outside.

Wow, didn't realise* that you had such an excellent, broad knowledge of the city. Obviously you are right, Manchester is a town of gun crime because somebody got shot there once.

*well firstly that you'd left Brum.

So the premise of this thread is "since Pebble Mill closed everything is made in either London, Manchester or the nations, to prove it here is a list of programmes which are made in Birmingham"? Right, I see where you're coming from then. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

You forgot BBC Bristol which is still a network production centre - much of the natural history comes from there, plus Casualty and Bargain Hunt amongst others.

Even BBC Leeds gets a look in on the network schedule with The Superleage Show (ok, it's technically an indie production that uses BBC Leeds facilities and the same freelance presenters)

Excuse me, BUT Manchester has less gun crime than Nottingham or even Birmingham. Anyway I assume that you have never visited the city properly otherwise you would realise that manchester......

1. Has the highest student population in Europe
2. The home to the bouncing bomb
3. Home to thefirst modern computer (talking computers and NOT micro-chips)
4. Joint first home (with Liverpool) of the countrys first passenger railway
5. Home of the world famous Halle orchestra
6. Has the most number of theatres (in a city centre) outside London
7. The only city in the country (including London) to have TWO Selfridges stores (city centre and Trafford centre)
8. Has FOUR Premiership ootball clu (Utd, City, Bolton and Wigan)
9. Has a rich mix of nationalities
10 Has more than the ancunian accent - there is also Lancastrian accent (wigan, bolton, leigh, Bury), West pennine accent (Rochdale, Oldham, ashton), and the Cheshire accent (Stockport and Trafford - including Altrincham)
11. Home to some of the best televison programmes that originated and stayed in the North West REGION (which includes Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and not just Greater Manchester)

Also do not forget that some programmes that are based in Manchester are actually produced by other BBC regions - Waterloo Road (rochdale) is actually produced by BBC Scotland!!!

Whilst STUDIO productions have decreased around the UK with the closure of ITV and BBC network production studios, there are lots of TV productions made around the UK on location.

Since the BBC now commission between 25 and 50% from Independents (*) - and this includes indies across the UK, and C4 and Five commission all their original content from indies, there is a LOT of stuff coming from around the UK. Yes - there are super indies who get a lot of commissions - but there ARE indies based in Leeds, Aberdeen, Plymouth etc. who are regularly commissioned, and in fact there are LOADs of regional commissions.

One little known fact is that The One Show includes a very large number of films commissioned from independent production companies (none of which are based in London).

The in-house films made for The One Show are also currently commissioned from BBC departments in Cardiff (consumer), Manchester (current affairs) and Bristol (natural history), with a couple of London specialist depts (science, history and art) also featuring.

(*) The BBC used to have to commission a minimum of 25% indepndent productions, now they still have that minimum, but have a further 25% Window of Creative Commissioning (WOCC), for which indies and BBC in-house departments compete, with only 50% of commissions guaranteed to be kept in-house. (This is one reason for the current wholesale redundancies...)

Manx accents would be accents from the Isle of Man not Manchester? But yes I agree with you, Manchester is a ****. By size of city Manchester is a 3rd of the size of Birmingham and only the 7th biggest city in England.

And to the other poster, I don't think the people of Wigan, Bolton and Leigh will be very happy with you claiming they are part of Manchester.

Depends whether you count Manchester or Greater Manchester. Most people mean Greater Manchester.
