That is lovely, that should be used nationwide & kept after the season (the idents could do with beefing up somewhat seeing as there's sod all left of the original set) perhaps there's hope of the original soundtrack returning yet (after all it still sounds great 21 years on)
Agree completely. I surprised myself when I concluded the soundtrack hasn't dated, at all. I knew it would still sound quite contemporary if used for a modern symbol, but having now heard it used in this way, it seems pretty much age proof!
BBC2 has been in a bad way recently; on the whole, hasn't recovered from the damage of the aborted refresh.
But, this is something really worth talking about. Network has been utterly shown up by this extensive and well-produced NI branding of late, without question.
I showed a couple of the Titanic NI logo promos to someone yesterday; they liked the design and narration behind them very much - they just thought it was a shame, even a waste, that something of this quality will never be seen elsewhere. In this case, it is of course a local design - the key point is that it is outclassing the BBC2 pres in the main. If England / Wales / Scotland were being shown these sequences, I'm sure they would agree.
Perhaps this standard shouldn't be a surprise. Every time I saw a Network trail where someone had been lax and used the old BBC TWO logo on an endboard, I would go over to NI and sure enough, they would always have the correct logo in use on their local versions. Simple things, but it happened more than once.
It increasingly leads to the impression that Network simply don't
care about pres
in the way NI do. I'm not saying that is the case, but recent history suggests this. Seeing it over the years, that's kind of saddening - that it is often now NI standing alone at the end as it were, comparatively making the best use of what they are able to playout. Network or others could do the same and yet don't seem to consider it - I would welcome them to prove otherwise (or help shed light on why they cannot) if they would like to.
A fair amount has still disappeared entirely. I miss the Cappuccino symbols quite a lot; the use - and destruction - of the chocolate sprinkle '2' being reminiscent of a 1992 sting style. Has a feel which is missing from the generics BBC2 has been left with.
But all said, NI's recent efforts have gone a considerable way toward redressing the balance - very worthwhile indeed.
