Andy is right... stereo transmission is not a universal format. In the same way that some countrys use PAL/NTSC/SECAM, there are countless more methods of transmitting stereo.
It is not feasable to transmit BBC World in stereo with it's current system. Only when the whole world goes to digits (a long way away I suspect) will we get stereo, as the box will decode the MPEG signal into the correct format for your TV system.
All idents/vamps/stings etc are recorded in stereo as a matter of course. However when they are transmitted in mono, it isn't just a case of adding the left & right channels together, there's serious mathematics going on - you hear the 'Middle' signal at home, and the 'sides' are lost. It's done in a similar way to encoding Dolby Surround into two channels, in that equipment look at the phase of each signal, decide what it needs and discards the rest

Well you are right BBC World is in mono, I watched the BBC World ending credits(and recorded in widescreen!
) on BBC News 24 at 9.55, and it sounds totally different!!
I think it's a shame for all that wonderful music composition to go to waste, but having said that BBC News 24 is carrying more BBC World output these days!

I'm not sure, but maybe this is something to do with the fact that since the attacks the BBC World schedule has been completely changed with all back half programmes focused on the events in America (HARDtalk, Simpson's World, The Money Programme etc. etc.). In some hours they have nothing at all and just extend the news bulletin and then start all over again at around 40 past the hour, normally with the same reports as the top of the hour. The only difference is that instead of the opening sequence being:
headlines,
titles,
welcome,
top story
on the :40 one it's:
titles,
welcome,
headlines,
top story.
So, maybe the reason this is happening on News 24 is because it's simucasting with BBC World. Not sure though, because I don't know what times they do these extra bulletins.

Well the BBC News Special from Washington with Gavin Esler at 1700 GMT today didn't start with the overnight BBC News titles like usual. To my surprise, it started with the BBC ONE News Generic titles! This is the first time I've ever seen these on BBC News 24, and BBC World!
NS
You haven't watched for long then! The joint overnight service always used to use them - hence why they are probably still on the News24 digital playout system and why they probably went out!
