In the current N6 studio and with the current music it seems much more upbeat (?) than the old one and not as serious. When a major major event happens - such as a major royal death or something on the horrific scale of Dunblane- I personally think the music and studio will look too 'bright' for such dark moments.
Maybe it's just me!...

Yes, i agree - the studio is fine for 'normal' news, but could use a slightly darker colour scheme for bad events. btw - has anyone noticed how the 10 has become a little more light hearted - with funny jokes from Andrew Marr and the like

The 10 has become slightly lighter in tone but they still have hard world reports such as reports on Aids, Prostitution and Sucide Bombers in the past two weeks. The changes may have come about after Mark Popescu took over as Editor of the programme. He was the man who was editor of the Six when it relaunched.
I don't know for sure if they still do this, but aren't the colours used in the screens showing the newsroom beind the presenters a bit different for each bulletin? Like light blue for the 1 and more browny for the 10? It doesn't seem to be just because it's day or night, it seems like they change the actual colours.
And yes, the last one was more suitable for major events. Notice how they used the 9 O'Clock set for Diana's death even though it was morning.

I really doubt they change the colours as they go through the day - but by being a live shot of the news centre which has a lot of windows you will get changes of colours - bright at one, dark at ten.
And, yes - maybe they would use a special version of the News theme for major bad news and maybe they could darken the set as per HardTalk (but a bit brighter!)
The set actually does get ever so slightly darker on the 10.
I don't know if its intentional, but the lighting is nowhere near as bright as what it is for the 1 or 6, and no before you say there's nothing wrong with my TV.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the projectors only... Not sure if the lighting is darker but surely if the backdrop is dark it looks darker in the studio?

Look at the Special opening titles for News 24 and World here on TV Home - I assume that these are used when something happens and there must be a normal BBC version!
Perhaps they have a studio decked out or that can be decked out (ie put in TC7) in the china red colour for 'bad things' which would be less bright but I think that it is news and news can be serious and somber or happy and smiley - all they have to do is wear a dinner jacket like QVC did when Diana died and it looks 'oh dear - something's happened'
They wouldn't use any music at all at first. In fact, last time, all terrestrial channels used silent idents.
I remember in that week, ITN News on ITV were using a studio with black drapes as a background, but I don't know how long this was for.
I reckon the BBC studio would stay the same, but the lighting would be changed quite a bit, and I don't think they would use any music at all for about a week or so after the event.

BBC News definitely did use music - not on the day - but in the week afterwards.
