I think the following presenters should be used:

Breakfast - Sophie Raworth and Asad Ahmed
News at One - Edward Stourton
News at Six - Sian Williams and Robert Hall
News at Ten - Chris Lowe/George Eykyn
Weekend - Sian Williams/Fiona Bruce

Stop living in the past! Smile
Some of those presenters were shunted to the depths of the BBC when the new format was introduced in May 1999. Ed Stouton is now on Radio 4's Today programme, and Chris Lowe is sometimes spotted on News 24. Robert Hall?? - wasn't he one of the main reporters of last winters floods?

I agree - I think the presenters since 1999 do work well overall. Michael Buerk in my opinion is the BBC's best presenter and knows what he is talking about.

I think the One O'Clock would be better with two presenters (meant to be cosier - good for daytime) but Six and Ten should be single handed - I don't see the point of two at all....

Should we start the Sian Williams fan club!!??

Robert Hall - yes he is one of the BBC's best kept secrets!
Sian Williams fan club - what a good idea.
Many people will agree with me that Sian is the best newreader.
Look what she has gone from:
Writing on a student newspaper at Oxford Polytechnic, studied Journalism in the US, offered a place on the BBC's Local radio training scheme, became a reporter, a producer, moved to London as an Editor, a News24 presenter - Now, a national news presenter!
By the way - she joined the BBC in 1986/87 - not sure.

I may have been a little wrong about Ed Stourton, he always appears snooty - even on Correspondent!

Ed Stourton reminds me of a character from the 'League of Gentlemen' - not sure why Smile

Ed is sometimes seen doing News24, but now does Radio4 and the World Service, with his nice BBC Accent!
Incidentally did you know Sian is to play a major role in the Beeb's election night coverage?

Yes, good news that Sian is in the election coverage. I also read somewhere that Fiona Bruce was going to feature highly as well - also someone replied to me here that Anna Ford has had time off to focus on preparing for that? I hadn't heard that before - anyone know what she's going to be doing?

As for Sian, I think she worked on BBC Radio Merseyside in the past as a news presenter.... might be wrong, but I think I read that around here somewhere!

Happy Easter everyone!

Anna Ford is the leading person on the Election 2001 coverage - that's why she was off for ages followed by Fiona Bruce. When the election was postponed, they came back (they got that desperate, Gavin Esler presented the News at One a few weeks ago!)

Steve, you are right, Sian Williams was a newsreader on BBC Radio Merseyside - my local radio station.

Do you mean Anna Ford is doing the election night coverage? Also, they brought Philippa Thomas over from Washington to cover the election (she popped up at Westminster a few times) but then when it was delayed they sent her back for a few weeks!

Yes, Anna Ford is on on Election night - she is the leading person!

Well of course David D. will be the leading person, and with his brother Johnathan on ITV, so Anna wont be the leading person, just one of them.
They normally have a few leading people (about 3 or 4 on each channel)
For example at the last election there was:
BBC (1): David D, Peter Snow, Jeremy P.
BBC (2): Nicky Campbell and someone else who I cannot remember
ITV: Johnathon D., Sue Lawley
Sky: Adam Boulton, Laurie Meyer, Micheal Ancram

and of course they have guests for the night as well..
Check out www.ge97.co.uk and find the Media Watch section.
Of course last time ITN won the ratings war in the build up the election, I expect this time it will be the Beeb.
And according to the ge97 site Sky's coverage was the best, and if you saw it you would probably agree.
The virtual studio was far better than anything of the other broadcasters.

is the site to look at.
