I thought the red bar was intended to contain images illustrating the top story, but it only seems to do so when the top story is about the 'War on Terror'. And it appears to have always been the exact same picture each time - US flag/GW Bush/remains of twin towers.
The incident in NYC is over two months old, the focus of events has moved on, so the image should now be different - e.g. aircaft/Osama Bin Laden/aid van, (or whatever).
Whenever the top story is something other than the 'War on Terror', the bar seems to always be just plain red. So, it seems likely that when it's all over the red bar will be removed again.
