Will N24 interactive have streaming video though?
I haven't heard about the BBC buying up any more space to provide video feeds, so perhaps it's just going to be a text service?
I know Sky are upgrading Sky News Active to 'phase 2', with the extra video, but have heard nothing about the Beeb offering video screens.
ITN don't, from what I know, but still call their service Interactive.
Can't say a huge amount ... but it will be more than text .... more Sky Active that ITN Active!!!
There is going to be a new news program, they have a new presenter and there will be weather, sport and business. There will also be acess to BBC TEXT and BBC ONLINE!!!
Certainly will be nice to have another interactive news service anyway.
I can't think what Sky are going to put on these 4 extra screens though.
I know Sky.com is available via Sky Text - but it doesn't look anything like the website.
I remember talking to a director of Sky News Active who told me they only do the small screen thing for 'effect'.
I'm not 100% sure what effect that is...
Anyway, here's the article.
Notice how this was planned to be ready for the GE. Obviously they didn't expect to relaunch quite so soon.
'BSkyB will soon add four more digital news streams to its existing Sky News Active channel, according to Dave Sparks, Sky's chief engineer.
Sparks said Sky had 'exciting plans' to stream up to eight separate feeds as part of the Sky News Active portfolio of services.
Currently, Sky Digital viewers who select 'Sky Active' get potentially four extra video streams comprising headlines, weather, showbiz, and business news. Viewers can then select from this mosaic of four (or choose a text-based option) and get a summary of specialised news.
Final discussions are taking place now with Sky News managers as to which sub-niches will be allocated their own video stream. 'But it hasn't got to be that way,' says Sparks. 'Imagine we are broadcasting the [UK] general election next year and we have eight simultaneous declarations taking place. We can show them all, letting the viewer choose which one to stay with.'
Sparks says Sky has created bandwidth for the extra four streams Sky by compressing the signals through both dimensions (that is, vertical as well as horizontal).'
