CheshireC - Re: the probability that the BBC gave the man money not to show his footage to anyone else. What footage? The one within the wine bar? Because GMTV was using that throughout this mornings transmission.

Yeah he would have given it out but it wouldn't have surprised me if he did ask the bloke to only give it out to the Beeb for a few hours, that happens all of the time.

Cirenwherever is not a neutral location though, not really. The BBC have hugely more resources across the UK than Sky, because of their local radio operations.
And I can't stand the royals anyway!

The Selby Crash was reported first on Sky but the Beeb were the first with a person there - again from local radio.

No idea who got pictures first because I left at 8am.

I remember quite clearly hearing Lorraine Kelly saying Jon Hill was the first person on the scene. I also remember looking through the channels (I hadn't digital at this point) and they only had 'reports of a rail crash at Selby'.

So, you can't stand the royals, and the fact you don't think Cirenwherever (that's CIRENCESTER! Heart of the Cotwolds) is a neutral location?

So, basically you're saying for Sky to have a fair advantage you'd like something to happen in, oooooh, Isleworth?

Hehehe ... sorry ... I'm just kidding with you matey Smile

Mind you, I was surprised today -- I was first there by a long shot - probably something to do with the fact I live a mile away Smile but I was there a good 20 minutes before anyone else ...

And on a related note. We will never beat the Americans for getting pictures.
I was listening to CNN the other night (CNN US this is) and a story that Chandra Levy's body (who!?) was buried under a car lot/park was broken.
It was apparently buried under a car lot in Virginia in the middle of nowhere.
Within 15 mins the local TV networks all had helicopters flying over the car park! And this was in the middle of practically nowhere!
I also remember watching KING TV (NBC affilate) in Seattle when there was the earthquake in Seattle. Not only was the coverage fantastic, they actually had the earthquake shown on live TV - as did the CBS affilate. Then had reporters in-vision on the ground within about 3 or 4 mins.
Then covered it for the rest of the day.
We really aren't in a position to match that sort of coverage.

They may have had a camera there first, although I am sure Phil Squire was the first reporter there as I was listening to Radio Humberside myself and he was at the scene by 0730 at the latest.

Hve to agree with you there. They always get the helicopters out. I remember watching them report that a bus had been hijacked and then they got the helicopter and showed it live!

No, but you understand my point though?
The BBC operate regional services and have far more people available than Sky need to have.
Take the Midlands as an example.
Sky do have a Birmingham office, a very good one too. but they only have about 5 correspondents in there.
In comparison the BBC have all of the BBC local stations in the Midlands and then BBC Midlands (TV) and BBC East Midlands.
So it is normally the case that in the UK that the BBC and ITV will always be able to get people at the scene before Sky.
But as a rule Sky normally get there a maximum of 5 or 10 mins after the other two, which is a pretty good achievement as they are such a comparatively small network.

But as a rule, and certainly in the North West this is the case, the ITV regional stations have many more bureau in their respective regions than the BBC do.
In the North West, Granada have about 5 or 6 whereas I think the BBC have about 2 or 3.

I'd say it depended upon where the story was - Selby rail crash they were useless and were talking to representatives from Railtrack over the phone for ages - in fact I remember they got their map wrong and had to change it!

Oh yeah ... I can see where you're coming from. The Beeb would certainly have the edge in these kinds of situations ...

As do a lot of the ITV companies over Sky -- Central and HTV were pretty damn quick, I'll tell you! Central even managed to hook up a live for 6pm, which impressed me! Mind you, I was telling everyone to go to Cheltenham since it seemed obvious to me they'd move him ...

Haha! Someone stole him, and replaced him with a happy version.

In truth, I'm actually off work ill, which is why I was at home, and why I got to the Charles story so quickly ... now there's dedication to work ...
