Why are your posts always so long Tom???!!! Rolling Eyes

I'm glad someone agrees with me on the 'on screen chemistry' thing. You need this on a TV show, it is what holds a viewers attention. I agree, Bill and Sian have got it but its not exploited... it should be. Dermot and Natasha don't seem to have it.

You are quite right there. So what are your suggestions on how Bill & Sian's chemistry could be exploited? As I've said many times before, they should be doing Breakfast on weekdays rather than at weekends. To be honest, I think they could potentially be among BBC News' most powerful tools, yet they refuse to use them to their full potential.

By the way did I see Dan 'the man' Corbet back at N24 the other night doing the weather? Now that fella knows how to present the weather, its fun weather!

Yes, you did see Dan "the man" Corbett back on News 24. Sadly it was only for a few months, and now he has returned to America. But he is a broadcasting legend, and I for one sincerely hope we'll see him and his fantastic personality presentation back on the BBC again in the near future.

BBCSPORT have always been good with its presentation as far back as i can remember, and i'm thinking back now to the Olympic Games of 84, yes 1984! Good graphics, sets, presentational style, good anchors, I mean look at the list, Des (who?), Harry Carpenter, Steve Ryder (the ultimate professional), David Vine; who from BBCNEWS can be compared to any of these over the past 20 years or so? errrrrrr... nope! Paxman (too political), Buerk (too... something), Sissons (I won't knock ol' Pete being a fellow scouser and true Red), will someone tell me who...

I think you are being unfair in criticising some of those you mention above. Although I agree with you about Paxman, Peter Sissons was excellent on the 10 (his N24 ability is questionable though), while Michael Buerk has shown himself to be a broadcasting legend.

And I think BBC News have other great presenters as well. Bill Turnbull, Gavin Esler and Tanya Beckett (to name just three) are all fantastically good, professional but likeable, with the right gravity to anchor the news while still having the ability to pull of humour and lightheartedness. The problem is the same as I talked about earlier though - these people are not used to their full potential.

I'd argue that they are being used "to their full potential" - Bill Turnbull is the second main male presenter of Breakfast, regular presenter of Weekend 24 and a regular on the Six O'Clock News; Gavin Esler is currently presenting Newsnight and Dateline London; and Tanya was BBC World's flagship European Breakfast WBR presenter, and she's just been promoted to the New York anchor of the 2130GMT WBR. That's pretty good going for all three of them. 18 months ago, Bill and Gavin were on News 24 shifts and Tanya was on Breakfast every few days.

You make some good points, and I think you are possibly right. They certainly have all come a long way in 18 months, I'll grant you that.

I suppose what I'm really saying is look at the main faces on the BBC News. Dermot Murnaghan, Anna Ford, George Alagiah, Huw Edwards, Fiona Bruce - all of them seem stale and dated, and I think there are far better presenters out there (like the ones I have mentioned) doing far lower-profile jobs.

It's not that they're staid, I believe it's the structure at BBC News that holds them back. For example, I thought Alagiah was one of the best newsreader a few years ago - now he's just patronizing and scripted on the 6. I don't understand why the BBC feel that 'commonfolk' need to be talked to like kids. I reckon Dermot should have hung around at ITN as he was being groomed to take over from Trevor in the long-term. Huw Edwards is a natural, but I think he lacks the gravitas for a flagship programme. Fions Bruce is just boring.

It is the structure at BBCNEWS. I'm a big fan of Huw Edwards, he is a natural, very calm, cool and he knows his stuff, he works the camera well. I would go as far to say that he is a bit of a Steve Ryder of news, he doesn't flap. Turnbull&Williams hits it it the head with regard to the others mentioned: Estler, Beckett, Bill T and Sian W... these people are also naturals, that have that 'unflapability'. Gavin has got history too, he is a seasoned newscaster: Newsnight in the 80's, Washington Chief in the 90's, back at Newsnight in the 21st Century.

I also think that Chris Eakin is quite good as well, he is relaxed, never afraid to improvise/take the mick. I did mention previously about FIVELIVE and how they have got excellent pairings with the best being Peter Allen and Jane Garvey on Drive. This is what N24 needs.

You're quite right there Tom - unflappable is pretty much the perfect word. Esler certainly does have some journalistic experience behind him, while Turnbull was also a news correspondent for a long time, many of those years spent covering Washington.

The other thing about the presenters I mentioned is that they really engage the viewer, rather than just talking at them. This is a hugely valuable skill.

Someone give Columbus a kickin'. Why does stuff like this happen, why do they let it happen? You don't see the SKYNEWS clock go AWOL, the FNC clock go walkies (and they tell 4 different time zones)... what happenin?

The N24 clock is taken off for promo breaks and sometimes the director forgets to put it back on (I would imagine at the moment being in a different studio it's even more complicated). I have seen Sky without a clock before. And the Sky News gallery don't have to play in the ad breaks so they don't have the same risk of forgetting to put it back on.

The Sky clock is put on by TX (ie: Pres) and sometimes they do forget. I guess thats another argument for having a TX area.... but hey this will all be fixed in the new world of the new 24..... Wink

The 5:35 business bulletin this evening was done live from the LSE (like the morning business bulletins). Is this normal or new policy?
