Doesnt all this sound too good to be true?

Well not really - you don't usually go to the expense of a big change (i.e. totally brand new set) without changing graphics and titles. Of course, there are exceptions. I don't know if anyone truly knows the reason why new titles weren't introduced with the new National set except 'they weren't ready'. Hopefully the relaunch of N24 will have a knock-on effect of the BBC One bulletins getting the new titles (unless they're as bad as what's show on the projector - in which case, never get rid of the current ones!) and with that will hopefully be the generic BBC One news ident.

I can tell you that:

The new set WILL be worth the wait.
It WILL be radically different to the current set.
The backdrop WILL be real, with real people,as they were.

This, along with huge a/c work, is why it's taking time.

Will this be a real window on the news centre or a projected backdrop?

It will be real - the new set will still be in the middle of the newsroom.

Call me stupid, but since when has the News 24 set been in the middle of the newsroom?

Depends what you mean by the middle, but the current/soon to be former set has Five Live journos on one side, and News 24 journos on the other, and it's possible to walk straight through the area.

I understand that the main camera positions are being turned around, and there will be more of the news room on show, but not the newsgathering hub which used to be seen in the background of the BBC1 news.

Not again! Didn't they turn it around last time?

Anyone noticed 24 rat has gone quiet since people noticed his lies!

[quote="Philip Cobbold"][quote="c@t]I do hope they just drop the "BBC" from it all and start calling it "News 24", it sounds so much better.

Why should they? The BBC make the channel, and so should have their name in the channel name. Would you prefer that ITV News Channel became the 'News Channel', and Sky News became 'News'?

No, don't try to be silly.

I'd much rather the ITV News Channel became the News Channel and BBC News 24 became News 24.

"Sky News" is two syllables. "BBC News 24" is seven. It's too wordy, too long, too awkward to say too often.

Five Live has been an enormous success without the presence of BBC branding, yet all those listening are well aware it is a BBC station.

I wouldn't dismiss 24 rat totally out of hand, just take it with a pinch of salt as tsunami__active has said. Asa said above that it would be more pratical for a channel to change everything when its relaunched, which is quite likely.

I'm just assuming not much will change because we've all been disappointed by BBC News 24 in the past and there's nothing to make me believe we won't be again.

This way, if they do come up trumps, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Unless of course someone who we know tells the truth, like Nicky S, can give us a nod towards, we'll be disappointed or we'll be pleased! No, that's asking too much, he'll just keep us waiting and put a smug Wink on the end!

I asked this earlier in this thread, but the question got buried quickly and nobody replied:

How do BBC News staff know what the new set will look like etc? Have pictures, artists impressions or models been made? Just wondering..

I'd have thought that the fact that their building it now would give them an idea! Obviously though they won't all know what the finished thing will look like, but they'll know colours, desks etc.

Well I suppose the new set wont be constructed until the new a/c system is fitted so I presume there isnt anything set-wise in the studio at the moment.

We keep asking whether it will be worth the wait, so that implies that we think BBC News people know the design (more than just colours etc.)

They would defenetly have some sort of detailed guides as to how the new set will look, some parts of it might have already been assembled elsewhere.

IIRC for the new national set introduced at the start of the year, a small model of how the set would look was built, something simular might be produced for the News 24 set.

Also, remember that even when the old set was still in use pre-Saturday, overnights came from BBC World weekdays for a few weeks, possibly so the studio could be checked with the new set plans to make sure everything would fit etc., and perhaps to record the shots for the CSO backdrops currently being used.

Aha - we finally have firm confirmation!

Jon Sopel was giving a talk to the Debating society at my Uni today (he used to go to Southampton) and this is what I asked him :

Me: "Jon, News 24 is having a big revamp at the moment; what change, if any, will we see in terms of presentation and agenda?"

Jon: "Well in terms of agenda we'll be focussing on having more analysis and in-depth, something the BBC does best, and something our rivals don't have a lot of. Presentation wise, yes there'll be a lot of changes - a fantastic new set, lots of whizzes and bangs along with new music and graphics as you'd expect. trust me, it will be very good when it goes live at the beginning of december."

Straight from the horses mouth! BTW - he's presenting Breakfast tomorrow morning (not that that's what he's best at.....)

Ta for the explanation. I feel much more enlightened now. Very Happy
