If I remember rightly, that's the plan - to have the actual news studio in a large atrium over several floors, in the middle of the new news centre, and a balcony round the top looking down onto it. So hopefully a bit like the current news centre, but with the studio in the middle, which would be fantastic!
I saw an artists impression somewhere of it and from what I can see you're right...it looks like there are stout metal columns with the studio supported above in the middle.

Don't know if the news studios at the new BBC News Centre at Broadcasting House which will be completed in a few years time, will be able to have sets like that. It would be good if they could have a set like that just so show off, but I doubt their will be room.
