Don't know if the news studios at the new BBC News Centre at Broadcasting House which will be completed in a few years time, will be able to have sets like that. It would be good if they could have a set like that just so show off, but I doubt their will be room.

(Just thinking about that, if the new news operation at BH doesn't have a large studio for elections, events etc., does that mean these will still come from TVC?).

If I remember rightly, that's the plan - to have the actual news studio in a large atrium over several floors, in the middle of the new news centre, and a balcony round the top looking down onto it. So hopefully a bit like the current news centre, but with the studio in the middle, which would be fantastic!

I saw an artists impression somewhere of it and from what I can see you're right...it looks like there are stout metal columns with the studio supported above in the middle.

Yeah, I think this is the pic you're talking about:

For one, American style uber flashy massive studios are not the style in the UK. Now...

They are building the new set in the BBC News Centre, where the old studio was, but they could pull the camera's back to show the 2 floors, maybe even have seperate desks again for weather, business and sport, mixed with wideshots of the newsroom.

eitherway, as long as its clean, uncluttered, and has a good atmosphere (people working, rushing around, discussions between staff etc.) It will be an improvement by miles.

EDIT: BBC News 24 made use of this when it launched...

Not quite - the image of Jane with the inset is from at least a year after News 24 launched, when it moved studio and galleries, and into the News Centre. News 24 launched from the currrent BBC World studio (which is effectively a windowless box)

This set is absoloutley awful at the moment, it doesn't look right, if they have to use CSO then please do alá ITV NC, they can get it right. But they'd be better off if they used the old UK Today studio/backdrop as that looked more correct, or even the set the normal BBC News used after the bomb in 2001. It's just too obvious it is CSO, it would look better if they didn't show the desk at all, but just the presenter and the backdrop, the sooner we get this new set the better.

Why not just use the BBC1 News studio with the News24 backdrop, and then when that studio is required move to the CSO, a bit like ITV do?

Also is there any particular reason why Weekend 24 on a Saturday couldn't come from the weekday Breakfast set?

I watched a bit at around 5/6pm and they seemed to be using two presenter shots for everything - never just one presenter on their own.

Why?

From those captures, I can't believe we are going to see N24 like this for six weeks, it looks so fake, even my sister knew it was fake, and she ain't into tv presentation!

Can we expect overnight broadcasts simulcasted with BBC World?

I believe that this has always been the case, but since BBC News 24 is in the CSO, will we have a unified BBC News service from the BBC World studio?

surely they won't be subjecting world to THAT THING they have at the moment. I would have thought it would have been N9 all the time. My dad was giggling at the screen burn the other day.

Plus I want Brekkie with "Bill and Sian" (only they can introduce themselves like that) from there again as it was great how they were bickering about the desk.

edit - is the second set a CSO aswell? It's better than the first one at least.

Overnights will probably come from the World studio 6 nights a week. One night has to come from somewhere else to give the World studio downtime and allow maintenance to be performed. Since News 24's A/C problems really, really started overnights came from World 6 days and News 24 1 day.

It's a good question. The directors are already vastly overloaded and doing the jobs of four people. It could look a complete mess. Depends how much resources they put into it.

When they do put extra effort into the channel it can pay off. Some of the BBC1 specials during the war were very well done. But then they did give the director time to prepare it and did put an extra person into the gallery.

I just can't help but think that unless the Beeb say seriously to themselves "yes, let's really make an effort and make News 24 really worthwhile" it's always going to have this black cloud hanging over it.

I seriously think they should do what they've done with Five Live and, in a sense, make it independent. And christ, I do hope they just drop the "BBC" from it all and start calling it "News 24", it sounds so much better.

It will be interesting to see - from a technical perspective - how they cope with the new style of presentation. What I do hope is that it kicks Sky up the arse a bit more. I'd actually love News 24 to overtake Sky for a sustained period of perhaps a year; Murdoch just couldn't stomach that and would have to invest even more money in it.

We shall have to see what Sky have in store though...
