it wont be in TVC, it would be in the News centre, and the whole of the newsroom is 2 layers at the moment...

Would the BBC ever build a 2 level set? Does TV Centre have enough room for that?

of course they could - TVC is a big building you know.

This set is absoloutley awful at the moment, it doesn't look right, if they have to use CSO then please do alá ITV NC, they can get it right. But they'd be better off if they used the old UK Today studio/backdrop as that looked more correct, or even the set the normal BBC News used after the bomb in 2001. It's just too obvious it is CSO, it would look better if they didn't show the desk at all, but just the presenter and the backdrop, the sooner we get this new set the better.

Well I know that its currently 2 levels...but you dont see it. I mean proper 2 level set. That you can see the height. Current it feels just like a regular office suite. They could acutally broadcast from TVC. NBC in NY broadcast its main newscast from Rockerfeller Plaza but its main newsroom/newsgathering is across the river in NJ at MSNBC. Could/would the BBC do that?

For one, American style uber flashy massive studios are not the style in the UK. Now...

They are building the new set in the BBC News Centre, where the old studio was, but they could pull the camera's back to show the 2 floors, maybe even have seperate desks again for weather, business and sport, mixed with wideshots of the newsroom.

eitherway, as long as its clean, uncluttered, and has a good atmosphere (people working, rushing around, discussions between staff etc.) It will be an improvement by miles.

EDIT: BBC News 24 made use of this when it launched...

I wouldn't have thought so in any of the current news studios, they are quite small. News has used a 2 level set before though, TC1 ( TVC's largest studio at 10,250 sq. ft) had one for the Vote 2001 election night programme.

Don't know if the news studios at the new BBC News Centre at Broadcasting House which will be completed in a few years time, will be able to have sets like that. It would be good if they could have a set like that just to show off, but I doubt their will be room.

(Just thinking about that, if the new news operation at BH doesn't have a large studio for elections, events etc., does that mean these will still come from TVC?).

Thats what I meant...no one said anything about an Uber-flashy...american nothing. I was just think since TVC had more room than the news one. But one can never tell because the camera angles are so tight and fixed. The channel look like its dead. I guess they are hoping that this refreshing will help it compete with SkyNews. I have a feeling that it wont. The legacy of the BBC's staid past will prevent anything remotely active or lively. Agreed?

If I remember rightly, that's the plan - to have the actual news studio in a large atrium over several floors, in the middle of the new news centre, and a balcony round the top looking down onto it. So hopefully a bit like the current news centre, but with the studio in the middle, which would be fantastic!

I saw an artists impression somewhere of it and from what I can see you're right...it looks like there are stout metal columns with the studio supported above in the middle.

Why not just use the BBC1 News studio with the News24 backdrop, and then when that studio is required move to the CSO, a bit like ITV do?

Also is there any particular reason why Weekend 24 on a Saturday couldn't come from the weekday Breakfast set?

The breakfast set is constructed in the morning before the show goes to air, and is then taken down to make way for Working Lunch, Newsround, and then Newsnight.

At the weekend, the set is used by Breakfast with Frost, so thats why they base it in the BBC News 24 studio...

I'm told that the cso will be tweaked today to make it softer - so lets hope tuesday at 9 will see an improvement. Other than that - considering the set up that they are using - i think they've done a pretty good job from what i've seen.
